hey guys what are your opinions on running a custom 3 way active set of focal utopia be's with the following components

utopia kit no 5 active and 2 x 21wx's for the midbass

how do you think the 5w2 would go for midrange duties?
and how do you think the 21wx would go for midbass?

cheers, Grant

from the Focal Website...
"IASCA 2006 french champions:
Expert category: Yann Canoine / Mercedes Class A / Utopia Be N°7 kit + 2 x 21 WX + FP Dual Monitor + 2 x FP 1.800"

so he uses the 21WX for subbass... no reason why it wouldn't work for midbass... might want to cross over at 200Hz.

the 5W2 should be fine up to 3.5kHz.. so yeh, if you want - go for it.

where in the front are you going to put the 21WX???

Juls uses the 21WX for subbass IIRC. Quite nicely done too.

not sure where ill put the 21wx's might do up a custom door and have them in there, then have the 5w2 in the kicks and the tweeter high in the door or in the a pillar, but im not to sure how they would go so far away from the rest of the setup, maybe put them in the kicks aswell and have a set of ambient tweets in the a pillar(dont know what brand or type)

cheers Grant

Man I wish.. :(

I've got 21V2's.. and I love them.. 21WX is my next subwoofers.. have to pay off this darn H701 and 9965E first however..

I WILL GET THEM!!

anyway, as for the post..

Personally, I'd be inclined to go with the 5" set then run a pair of the 5" subwoofers each side as midbasses, the 8" subwoofer would work as a midbass, but used as a subwoofer specifically it will work better.

the 5" subs only need 3-5 litres to work, where the 8" subwoofers need 30 litres to work properly.

I can see potential design headaches trying to find 30 litres either side.

Yes you can run them in 15 litres, but your low sub bass will be compromised.
I believe run subs for subs, and midbasses for midbasses, Focal is one of very few companys that designs freqency range specific speakers, such as Specific Midbass drivers and specific midrange drivers.

In such I would highly suggest just going to the No 7 Kit and 2 21WX subs..

the 2 21WX's should provide more than enough output for SQ purposes, my 21V2's go pretty hard really for what they are, if I want to crank em right up.

4-way is a pain in the butt if you just want to run off the head unit.(5-way is worse)

I'd try it - you can always buy the 4" mids later... i'd suggest putting the midrange and tweeters close together, preferably up in the doors, dash or A-pillars.

the 3-way+sub would be ideal for this - but mids still require some enclosure, top of doors is best for mids;then a-pillar, sail or dash for tweeters.

if the bass/subs are in front and only playing below 300Hz, then somewhere with enough space is fine - you'd want at least 20 litres though.
