Take a listen to this unbelievable track - http://www.unoriginal.co.uk/Audio/Holophonic.mp3

Have been listening to a few of these different types of audio samples for about an hour with a mate, just chattin about it.

Can anyone lay on the table, in laymens terms, what is going on with our ears and our brains while listening to this track? How does this track trick our ears into percieving this 2 channel (wear headphones when listening) audio as a matchbox that is literally moving around our heads?

My basic assumption on what is happening is that audio sounds muffled when it's behind you, so the way they do this is by adjusting frequencies to suit the "movement" of the sound source? Hard to explain, but i hope that makes sense.

WHATS GOIN ON ERE!? :silly:

what do you mean by intensity? How loud it is? Aren't you just basically saying that it's fading between the left and right channel?

lol, thats what im trying to say hehehe

and in regards to how it sounds like its coming from infront or behind, well, the higher freqs are "muffled" or reduced at a point, as to make it sound like its coming from behind

our brain processes it, and it seems to come from behind, as thats what would actually happen. its the way our eears are directed forwards...

Yeah that pretty much was the way i thought it happened. Interesting though! Would certainly be interesting to listen to a piece of "3D audio" and be able to see the different frequencies and what was done to the audio to get it to sound like it's coming from behind. Would also be interesting to see if you could recreate something similar with a sound that wasn't originally recorded that way!

maybe..i mean, that may have been done by puttin a sheild on one side of teh mic, and walking around it, bt you never know.

but it might be possible to get a recording of the same thing, without teh sheild, and attentuate all freqs above a cetain point....
