SQ Amp - Audison vs Rockford
#1
Posted 13 April 2007 - 12:20 AM
Been reading loads of stuff on this forum, and i haven't had any direct comparisons between Rockford and Audison amps.
Many installers in Melb are telling me to go Rockford over Alpine or Audison amps, but seems like many people on this forum use Audison.
Any help? advice would be appreciated.
I plan to run Boston Pro60s and a Sub (yet to be decided - but thinking hertz).
Thanks in Advance!

And love them both.
The RF amps gutsy, with a huge amount of power, punch are aokay, better than your majority of average amps, but the power series is jsut on another level.
Audison amps are very nice, clean sounding, nothing to fault at, build quality is good as well, but not as powerful as most RF amps..given same price etc etc, but then again power isn't everything.
Which ever you choose you will have great products from both.

1) doesn't stock those brands;
2) gets a better commission from RF than the others; or
3) has never heard of audison so obvioulsy bags it out.
i have run an Audison SRx2 for a few years now, and i find it a great little amp.
small footprint, fully adjustable x-overs, great build quality etc. etc.
i doubt you'd be disappointed with either RF, Alpine or Audison though

Guess I'll go for the Punch series p450.4 It includes the sub control thing - which might be useful.
There just aren't many stores in Melbourne that sell Audison. I've only come across Audio FX...
So it seems like i'm going to go with:
Eclipse CD7100
Rockford P450.4
Boston Pro60s
Hertz ES250
Think its a good combo?

But just depends what you are comparing to... If you are comparing the Punch with the SRx series, then both would be on par.
LRx > punch
Power would be around LRx. etc
But yeah, if you can't find many stores that stock audison, and youa re happy with the RF amp, go with that.
But I'm sure someone could point out the dealers for Audison, cause I know there should be a fair few in Melbourne.

As Shiny, Stooge n a few other mentioned it would depend on which Audison series u select. Also agree with the fact that if the stores has recomended the RF its probly coz they dont stock Audison. I had the same issue in Perth, only found 1 store that stocks Audison, RF is just more commercialised, doesn't mean they r any better tho, I went with 2 LRx amps for my setup, runnin Boston Pro 60's for my front stage n a mono for the sub, im very happy with em, just a lil fine tuning required atm.
IMO i would go Audison LRx or VRx over any RF for SQ.

and listen to absolutley everything before i commit to even a bit of cabling from a store, and definitely dont limit yourself to what your store sells....
you may just find yourself wanting some dyns after hearing them, which cost just as much as the bostons...

If it came down to me personally, the Rockford wouldn't have a chance. It'd be Audison without hessitation out of those two.
What type of price range is this in? If it's around the entry level price point, then Audison SRx range would take my vote above anything else on the market. I think they are an excellent value for money line, and offer a great ballance between biuld quality, reliability, output and sound quality that (at that price point) is hard to beat.
But then, that's just my personal input.
I'd have to agree with Charlie as well on this occasion and say that listen to as many speakers as you can (if you haven't already) before rushing into any purchases.
Boston Pro's are very much an aquired taste.. kind of abit of a 'love it or hate it' type speaker. Not saying they aren't a quality product - they are.. They just tend to be a little aggressive in he top end and as such have a tendancy to rub some people the wrong way a little

But as a few others have said i'd go the Audison LRx or VRx series over the RF amps. Depends on what ones your looking at though.
Goodluck deciding and with the purchases. Out all the brands you've mentioned though once set up it will sound very nice either way.

When people ask me the Audison vs RF question my answer is simple.
Both are powerfull, both are excellent products in their own right.
I like to compare these brands to two cars, a Dodge viper and a Ferrari, both are fast, both corner and brake well both are exciting cars.
The Viper screams "I have power and muscle" with an exhaust note of power and promise waving the stars and stripes in an American way. The Ferrari on the other hand simply has an exhaust note that sings to you but it leaves you in no doubt that it has the refined power, you just know what it does, it's simply an Italian thing - I guess it could be put as simply as your either a Ferrari fan or a Nascar fan !
So do you want a muscle car or a Ferrari? Both are great, the choice is as simple as what do you want?
There are a few stores that sell Audison and Hertz in Melbourne.
Performance Car Sound Bayswater ******
Auobarn Moorabbin *****
Autobarn Melton ****
Autobarn Bendigo *****
FHRX - Camberwell ** (Edit - Should be Audio FX Camberwell)
Hektik - Brunswick ***
(The more **** the wider the range they have at the shop to see)
In Germany next week I am hoping that I will be able to shoot photo's of the 2007 SRx range which will be an all new line up, new design, new power ratings that will be slightly higher, and I have been told that there will be a new Digital sub amp as part of the line up, and yes a new price.
The current SRx price point will be filled by the new Hertz EP range which will also be released at the show ( I hope ).
So hold your horses a while and watch the forums and there will be some interesting new stuff to consider, I will be posting photo's of the show and lots of products when I return in approx 2 weeks time.

Not all things in the car audio industry are created equal...
Especially equipment and installers.
A bad installer won't blame his tools or his skill, he'll blame the equipment!

That's true, but to be completely honest:
1) Yours was the first set of Boston Z6s I've heard, and they sound very nice. Smooth, detailed and natural. That said, they are the first set of Boston's I've heard that I've been able to say that about.
2) Your's are the Z's, not the Pro. All other sets I've heard have been the Pro's, and while they are a quality product they have all shown that inherent brightness / harshness that just in all honesty just doesn't do it for me.
3) I'd say the reasons for yours sounding so good are probably that they are (1) Z6's rather then prod and are (2) tuned very effectively. Sure you can make anything sound good with some tuning, but the Pro's come across to me as one of those speakers that would require more tuning then most to get right.
As I said, im not trying to say they aren't a good speaker, just that (much like Focal) many people tend to either love them or hate them out of the box.
I'm a strong beliver in 'anything can sound great if tuned well', but at the same time some speakers tend to sound a little flatter and more natural out of the box, while some others tend to require a lot more adjustment to get right.
Your Zed's sounded bloody great the last time I heard them
