I'm prepared to get flamed for this, but if you're after a cheap way to test your systems staging, imaging and overall balance you could do a lot worse than an Ipod and a pair of Koss KSC75 to use as a reference. Do a Google search for reviews on these clip on headphones.. for something weighing 30gms and with a RRP of $79.95 these are a bargain and absolutely blow crappy Ipod speakers out of the water.

I got mine for $35 delivered and I'm amazed at how they sound... I just wish my car sounded this good for the price of 2doz VB's :)

Yeah thats the place where I first heard about these ones ... they rave about them too. I just happened to find a set local in Brisbane for $35 delivered instead of the $64 from headphones.com.au

Yeah they are popular headphones, I am not that familiar with Koss from experience, but they are a popular set for under $100 :)

Guess I'm the only chump who paid the $64 from headphones.com.au
For $64 the build quality is terrible, I should have hunted around like everyone else.

They sound pretty good, but I don't think they're as amazing as everyone goes on about.

i just got the sennheiser in ear ones......they were the best "in ear" ones i could find in the normal shops....should have had a look on headphones.com.au if i had known about it

although as far as i know there arent alot of good in ear ones around....im in love with the senns
- cut out all background noise
- sound great

i really needed in ear ones cos
- i use them on the bus alot so lots of background noise
- using normal headphones annoys other people and you loose so much sound
No car, no system, no idea

If you're talking about canalphones, then have a closer look on headphones.com.au. There's a pretty big selection available.

hmmm i had a set of audiotechnica canal phones and found that whilst they block out the external sounds, some freqs in the lower mid spectrum weren't as clear.

i've since gone to bang & olfsen A8s, and i haven't looked back since!

The only excuse for passive crossovers is their low cost. Their behavior changes with the signal level dependent dynamics of the drivers. They block the power amplifier from taking maximum control over the voice coil motion. They are a waste of time, if accuracy of reproduction is the goal.

The idea of using headphones to benchmark, or calculating a products cost based on alcoholic beverages?

Im pretty sure the concept is playing a song in your car taking note to staging and overall sound then listening to the same song with headphones and seeing the difference between them.
Im not sure if its worth it, you would probably end up getting annoyed with your car or your headphones :P

Well I think the point is to back to back listen to the same music at the same time as tuning - as the headphones have been setup already to achive the best staging, imaging and overall balance that they can provide and this makes them a good reference.
