Hey guys,

Haven't had to use spray glue at any stage for any of my installs as im normally a staple gun kinda guy. But im re-trimming the factory molded boot carpet on the side walls of my boot (Holden VT sedan) and im just after some good spray glues that will hold the new carpet, on top of the old carpet. Any help is much appreciated.

try supercheap auto or bunnings they would have something or a ruff idea or even try your local automotive trimmer he might be able to sell you what you need for a decent price

the bostik and other stuff you buy at bunnings is pretty average. I bought some to do my kicks, and it barely holds the material in place.

Maybe try thinning down some normal contact adhesive, or ask an autotrimmer.

I noticed at Clark Rubber they had two strenghts of aerosol spray adhesive (I think both were still Bostik though; could be wrong). Without knowing which shizzle tried, you could check the higher-strength version Clark Rubber have.

Personally, I prefer paint-on contact adhesive out of a tin, for high-strength applications. It's only downside is with very thin materials (eg: thin cloth or felt) which can show up any minor lumps and clumps of glue. But for most vinyls and carpet it's fine.

i use the cheaper stuff that you get from jaycar (electus).

my trick is:
be sure the surfaces are clean.
spray a generous layer on the carpet which will be enough to colour it.
carefully spray a nice even layer on the other surface (the metal)
the time taken to do the second spray will help the carpet glue turn tacky
once thats done, wait another minute or so. touch the metal to ensure its very tacky, but not slippery at all.
bond your materials and away you go.

the time taken for the second spray is vital to the additional time needed for the heavy first layer. if the glue is ever gooey on either surface when bonding, it will not work or will require pressure until dry. my method has never failed me. i also use the marine floor carpet from bunnings so its its not the most flexible or materials to work with, and still keeps strong.

and adding to shiny's comment about paint on adhesive. kwik-grip is my preferred product.

Get 3m Super 76 Spray Adhesive, it is the only product worth getting I have had three different trimmers tell me it is the only product worth the money to get a permanent solutions. But it is expensive somewhere between $30-$35 a can, but definitely worth the money http://products3.3m....ler/output_html

One of it's main advantages is it has a very high temperature rating so you will never have issues with heat causing the glue to fail.

I've used contact adhesive for carpet on carpet. TBH I'm not sure that a spray adhesive will have the ability to achieve what you are wanting being two porous materials.

On a side note I used a can of 3M 90 spray adhesive (recommended by the autobarn sales rep, yeah I know) to retrim my hood lining and it was absolute rubiish for sticking the foam backed material to the roof panel. I ended up fixing it with the cheap supercheap SA.

3M 90 is unfortunately a pretty bad option for hoodlining BMWturbo, 76 High Tack or Super 77 would have been the best idea.

I have used both for carpeting AND hood lining / trimming and there is simply no substitute.

Painting contact adhesive on is fine... once... but messy and a pain in the ass if you want to do it often or in wierd situations.

i also have used 3m 76 from clark rubber.
It cost me $40 a can but it does do a large area.

I run out with only a small area to do so i went and bought some bostik.

Selley's Gel Grip is also a good option

Try a local trimming supplies, they will normally sell it as well but it will be cheaper then somewhere like Clarks rubber.

if you want some trimmers glue, ive got some at home for a small fee.. if you wanted me to glue it on with a spray gun for you, and give it back i can arrange that cheap enough... probably cheaper then a decent amount of crapty spray adheasive from one of the local stores..

thought about making up some 3 or 6mm panels around the boot?? easier to trim, and could do it in a nicer material...
pm me if interested mate...

BRAD..

The most commonly used adhesive is bostik2 701 or 2700 if you want red. All of the reputable trimmers and car audio stroessner I've been to tend to use it as well as myself for 5 years. Never had an issue. It's bostiks high heat glue

3m is in my opinion some of the best stuff but when i could get a hold of anything i got myself some "Permatex" stuff it was about $20-$25, in an orange car and it worked well sticking my vinyl to some plastic grills.
