Full Version: SQ Judging: Too much, or too little?

Many people think that the IASCA judging system as it currently stands is far too cumbersome, making it hard to implement on a regular basis (Is this why IASCA is currently in decline???).

The alternative, which has become more popular over the last 3 years, is that show promotors are using their own judging systems (and judges), which are often far to simple to be truely effective, and offer no judging synergies from event to event.

Example: this is the "Judging guidline" from the recent Adrealin Metal show in Sydney.

"i.c.e. judging criteria

1. Overall appearance of the motor vehicle or component modification external or internal. What are the first impressions of the vehicle when approached?

2. Quality of workmanship, that is the overall sound system integration, visual appeal and uniformity of detailing of the whole system.

3. Attention to detail originality and innovative styling and the use of new materials and technologies for the sound system installation.

4. The extent to which the vehicle has been detailed that is the interior, boot and any areas associated with the sound system installation.

The above 4 items will be awarded a total out of 40 points

i.c.e. sound quality

Vocal track - this item will be awarded a total out of 20 points

Rock track - this item will be awarded a total out of 20 points

Dance track - this item will be awarded a total out of 20 points"

Surely a balance must be found..... Judging MUST be more accurate than what is described above, yet must still be simple enough to implement in a variety of locations.

Where do you stand on this issue???

Matt.

Hi Matt, this is a obviously a complex issue, but here goes
The competition scene is different from state to state. NSW IASCA asked us(IASCA Vic) to judge at SAS Final battle, and so we travelled up (at own expense) to help out. I wouldnt agree IASCA is in decline, as QLD WA and VIC still have well supported events, but obviously, NSW is not being supported as well, and so your impression may be fair enough for the NSW scene. The problem is that ppl want to compete but not judge or marshall, and so any event that has small judging team, and lots of competitors means the judges work there butt off. Anyway often any comp can be hard to get support for, and things will only improve when more ppl offer to help out.
Now the IASCA rules are great IMO, for am and pro classes, but often tend to scare novices, as they can get quite the wrong impression that its all about throwing money at it, when in fact often the best cars, are often built under the tree in front yard of the owner, and have consumed hundreds of hours hard work to get to this level, and if this work was paid for, the cost would be astronomical. This type of competitor often knows the rule book as well as we(judges) do and has built it to maximise points, and has photo logs, fire ext, etc to gain every possible point. The novices often have great systems, but because they were not built with the rules in mind, they loose the chance to gain some easy points, and so even though the system is a good system, it doesnt win. Im not sure why some events are using their own basic rules and not getting the event IASCA sanctioned, but obviously that is at the promoters discretion. This situation of different rules at each event then leads to where the goal posts move from event to event, and can result in competitors becoming disillusioned(sp) with the whole thing. IASCA Victoria is having a meeting to discuss these and other issues tommorow night, and so I will be able to actually tell you more about what we are doing to address these issues, after meeting.
Stay tuned
peace
