Cyberpunky
Think about why they would all use MJ to demo stuff. Hint, its because everything sounds good with that disc, as does the Dire straights brothers in arms. They are a salesmans best friend.

Its better to use stuff that has female vocals, that are always hard to get right, breathy recordings to hear for sibilants, acoustic stuff to hear for the subtle things like the strings getting pluckked and the fingers moving around the fret board etc. Only really good speakers will find these types of tracks easy going, where as any speaker will sound good with MJ blasting thru it IMO

i always favour using acoustic instruments and voice, both male and female.

As CP says, female voice to get a handle on sibilance, male voice to check for "chestiness" and acoustic instruments because you have your own ref for if a trumpet sounds like a trumpet, a piano like a piano etc.

With electronic sounds it might "sound good" without you knowing if it sounds "right" so it's then not SQ testing is it?

I have generally use the album:

Rage Against the Machine - Self-titled

as a test-bed for SQ on a system.

I do this not only because I love that album but it is actually recorded in a way which boosts the lows, mids and highs...
So if you try playing it on ya stezza, and you can clearly hear and reference the lows, mids and highs, then i'd say that you've got a good system.

Trust me... if your into rock then use this album!
[white lie]
i think the idea of testing for SQ isnt to find songs which sound good on your system, but to find one's that sound bad

this way, you will see the flaws in your system and know what you need to change in order to get it sounding better

the idea of good SQ is to have a system that sounds good with all types of music, not one that sounds good with a CD that will also exhibit good SQ on a cheaper system
