Well i got a few questions to ask, but before you answer im NOT trying to enter comps so it doesnt have to be perfect, i prefer my sound stage to be all around me and i like my bass at all volumes.

I was wonderin if 4 10" subs would sound better than 2 10"s or will they sound to sloppy?

I heard/read monthes ago somewhere that if oyu use 2 subs u get a +3db, im not to sure though if this was sedan or wagon, but well is this true and which is it?

Back to 4 subs, well i had an idea awhile back. i seen cars that had subs placed in corners of the boot. so i thought of having 2 subs on each side of the boot, the 1 on each side closest to the rear seats facing out and the 1'z on either side towards the opening of the boot facing inwards, so that it kinda creates a diamond shape with most of the boot inbetween seperating the 2 sides though, and i will have my amps and other stuff in between both sides. Can people tell me any problems they see with this? and even any benifits?

Ok well sorri about the long post but i wanted to get it over and done with.

the audible difference between 2 and 4 sub will be quite minimal .. and the volume increase won't be as noticeable like goin from 1 sub to 2 subs. If all the gains are set correctly and they are all in phase .. you should have no problem with them sounding 'sloppy'. IMHO though having 4 subs has no real advantage over 2 other than 'wank' factor.

you get a THEORETICAL 3dB gain when either doubling cone area + power .. or halving cabin size .. do both and you theoretically get a 6dB gain.

i say theoretically coz realistically you can get something like 6dB gain from doubling surface area .. or you might get like 1dB gain .. it's on a case to case basis.

no problems or advantages really .. just remember that the interaction of each sub (although probably minimal) will cause some cancellation within the cabin.

In a tech sense, superVT is on the money.

Given that we are talking SQ tho', the real issue is how best to make it sound like it should.
The 4 x 10" thing as you describe it, is as superVT suggests, a bit of an unknown as to how it will load. You might get something smoother, you might get it peakier.

Costs $$ going 4 subs and I would think that something simpler done properly with good driver(s), amp(s) and good enclosure is likely to giver a better SQ result.

A well-executed twin 10 or 12 can be very tasty-sounding and give plenty of hammer as a bonus. If we are talking SQ, any "numbers" it might produce are of no consequence

IMO I would go twin 12s for the weight in the low bass it can give you. Try and have a listen to something like this at a meet (JohnA's set-up for instance) to see/hear a good example of what can be done.

Good quality INSTALLED systems are a great way to get a handle on what is gonna be best for you. There's no beating it IMO.

Hope that helps.

As everyone else has said i doubt you fill find a great benifit from using 4 10's compared to 2 in SQ terms.
I'd say stick with 2 10's or 2 12's if you want it to go lower...
If you can make it to the upcoming meet you can have a listen to some nice SQ systems and get some ideas

if you're going to buy 2 subs anyway, why not spend a bit more and buy 2 better 10's or 2 better 12's and sell the ones you've got?

what do you have now?
