Get you a USAC Test cd or the one from Team gates. They have test tracks that will help you find the Holes in your system.. they dont cost much either and are great tools anyone can use.

For staging when sitting in the seat of your car picture yourself in the front seat of a concert and the top of your dash or better still your bonnet is the stage, nice and high and extends right accross the width of your dash also.
To get this perfect soundstage it all comes down to placement and angle of speakers, get this wrong and no device will help correct any major problems.

Tools like time alignment can help to correct slight imperfections but never think of it as a magic cure for all.

As for the rear think of it as fill, most of the time you won't even need but if you do decide to go ahaid with it may i suggest you don't run highs and stick with mid and better still give them a mono signal. You don't want the rear speakers to take anything away from the front (ie: drag the soundstage toward the rear of the car) Have a look at an IASCA score sheet and you can see how staging is judged.

As for centre channels i personnaly don't like them unless you are going 5.1 dolby digital as i believe that this could make it seem like everything is in the middle of the car and the imaging will be confused.

Hope this has helped you somewhat

I know i am no SQ freak but from my experience staging is so personal it is differnt for everyperson. It is so about trial and error, i am sure the other guys will tell you the basics but i myself like to fund the music coming from the back and the front so that the sound seems to be coming from beside me and i'm enveloped while my mate likes to have the sound feels as if it is front biased and out in front of him... i know i am no help but yeah

i'm with Gifford,
i like to be surrounded by sound, rather than it hitting me from the front,
but i also tend to face my back to the stage at concerts, usually due to the poor acoustics of the concert halls (people think i'm weird when they see me do this)

T-Bro has had huge success with a centre channel, hit him up for some info

I also agree that it's a personall taste but if you are going to get serious about SQ and enter comps then the forget about the sound coming from all around you.

Mr.Bob when listening to your home stereo do you also sit with your back to the speakers?

i can't, there's no where to mount the speaker behind me.
i'm hardly ever home to listen to my home stereo

the reason i do it at concerts is more due to the reflected waves off the back wall of the hall, for some reason i can't stand hearing them from behind me it's really off putting.

Staging is always a difficult thing.....
ideally you are wanting to be getting the speaker drivers as far forward as possible so this equalises the distance to the listener from each channel. That helps a lot, and it's not always as easy to do as you'd like.

Keeping the drivers reasonably close together usually helps.

In the end, there's the Ideal and there's getting the best result you practically can too.

I've found that properly placed splits up front will actualy make you think you have music comming from behind you also..Imaging done correctly is very dynamic...takes time, patience and sometimes good luck

Often its a good idea to visit a high end home audio store and get an audition of the best speakers they have. This will give you an idea of what you are trying to do, in the car. Good staging is virtually impossible in the car but we can get close, but until you have experienced what good staging and imaging is like it will be hard to get right.

Anyway the idea is that the speakers virtually dissappear and we are just listening to the music while not being aware of their source. The vocalist will usually be centred and we can hear the precise position of the other instruments.
good luck
peace

I also recommend a test CD. I have the Alpine Highway 1 CD and a couple of Focal ones and they are awesome for critically reviewing your system. Grab one of those and use the tracks specific to staging etc and you'll quickly find out what the strengths and weaknesses are.

staging is a very tough one to get 'right' and its taken me a couple of years to get close to what i think sounds natural, big, wide and balanced.

i wont try and give you a fixed formula or any dogma - or i will say is, experiment with different components, locations, alignements (aiming) and above all else CHEAT a car is not a purist environment, so its ok to go against the rules of stereo to restore what the car takes out.

as a 'to-get-u-started' consider angled pods (doors or kicks) low and forward, each pod aimed at the opposite listener, trying keeping mid and tweet together, and then try other stuff to improve from there. this is the standard formula, and while it is limited in what it can do i find it gives the basic ingredients for great sound.

as for centre channels - i am one of the few people i know who use one. i used to curse even the idea of a centre channel - until i tried it it isnt necessary for serious SQ, its just another way to 'cheat' and get around the fact that your sitting outside the magic-V. i personally love what it has done for my system, the stage is very balanced from left to right, the stage is actually 'detached' from the speakers, and obtaining that ever elusive centre image is now a real possibility. however, to make it work well, i find that you MUST equalise the centre independently of the left/right array. while my basic tuning is done, im still doing the fine tuning but so far im very impressed.

as a side note, experiments in Barme's car which i am helping to build has shown digital time alignment to provide good results in evening out image placement and providing a discernable centre image - so thats another way to cheat but that doesn't affect the stage.

another thing the Americans are doing (and that im now doing also) is to add ambient satellite speakers higher up in the car to raise the sound stage and provide added ambience - can also help counteract the 'rainbow' effect. while you should still have the tweets next to the mids, having secondary ones higher up and set/EQ'ed properly can provide some trickery for improving height (and also depth i've found).

in short - get some cheap mids and tweets, hook them up to looooong speaker leads from your amp, and start bluetac'ing em in different places and take notes. this will help to find what will get your car staging well. what you generally look/listen for is a stage that is wide (same as car cabin width), about as high as the upper dash/bonnet, and has depth and dimension.

imaging (location/definition of instruments and vocalists etc) is then another problem
