is there a noticeble difference in sub sq between amps? or is it more a bad amp can run a good sub, if the box is well designed?

(in other words would a jaycar 2x150 (bridged 450rms) be ok for my 12W3 D2)

when it comes to sub amps, it is basically just the power you need. (unless your an SQ freak)

In your case, a jaycar amp will be fine to run the JL.

You should go down to a car audio store near you and have a listen to some subs running off 'normal' amps and then have a listen to the 'sq' amps. (use the same sub).

See if you can tell the difference

Well the is some difference between sub-amps in SQ but it is not earth-shaking by any means.

As you have already alluded, the big thing will be to build a good enclosure, that suits the driver and is strong and rigid.

The Jaycar will do quite a nice job I think anything better in a worthwhile sense will be big $$.

Main difference will be in the damping factor of the amp..wich can control the tightness- quality of the sub output. When you run those class D amps down below thier 4ohm load..the damping factor and thd really jump- thats the trade off.

You might not beable to tell the diff..you may. I know that I usualy run my subs at the 4ohm load to get the cleanest output possible.

You really wont know till you get it installed either...

good luck

yeah, thats kinda wot i wanted to know, if lower quality would mean a less responsive sound (in theory)

i swapped amps today (from a BOSS 4x200max to the jaycar 2x84rms which i had laying around) and not only is it a sh!tload louder, it is much punchier. very happy.

so will the 2x150 be better? only time will tell...

You could do alot better than the 2x150.

ppl say it doesn't matter subs have X% distortion. but try a jaycar 2x150 and a v power alpine and SQ will be diffrent from the sub.

have alook in the FS section for the same price of the jaycar u prob can pick up a nice little amp putting out round the same power and sound alot better.

i heard there was a 2X100WRMS kicker in the FS forum, this would do well for your W3

If you can't find something going cheaply second hand, just buy the Jaycar. They're great amps, put out an absolute crapload of power, and even look pretty nice too (well, the 2x150 and 4x100 look good). Hell, with the way Jaycar prices are, just buy two!

Sorry but an amp aint an amp IMO and to assume its just about watts into a resitor goes against what SQ is all about. Sure the diff may be small, but all improvements in SQ are small. Its only how all the small things add up that seperates a $800 system from a $3000 system and a $3000 from a $30,000 system.

Is a $30,000 system better than a $3,000 system, well yes, but is the small improvement worth the extra $27,000, well thats up to person who is handing over the money.

Sure the more we spend the better it gets, but to say SQ is just about W rms into a resistor, and to forget that SQ is about listening is why some are happy with a jaycar amp running subs and others arent.

No one is right or wrong, but that doesnt mean going the extra yard isnt worth it. I would use Jaycar amps if I could get the results I am getting now, but I cant and if the jaycar amps give you what you want, then its all good, but they sure dont give me what I want, and I have spent far more than jaycars would have cost to get what I want, but I am happy to do so, as I listen to my system and dont care how it measures into a resistor.

I hope that helps and makes sense

Quite so CP. Damn shame about "The Law of Diminishing Returns", my wallet hurts. Ouch!!

But the returns are there if you are prepared to pay for them....even if it is somewhat incremental, and more so the higher-end you get.
