Ok ppl, ive decided to look into every high quality sub theres out there...but thats not over $1000.
Ok here are 3 subs ive looked into, which might be a possibillity for me to purchase.
Im after a sub thats got good SQ but can also play nice - tight - punchy - hard - BASS.
1. xtant x1044 - this sub looks heaps cool, but how does it sound & cost?
2. image dynamics IDQ10 v.2D4 - hoz this sub sound and cost ? this isnt a spl sub is it?
3. Boston pro 12 inch sub - is this sub any good, i heard it cant play dance music very good.
4. Wot else is good out there?

1. I've heard this, very smooth, musical sub. will sound beatiful with ~500wrms!
2. A bit cheaper than the others, ~$500? But still a nice sub. Not specifically for SPL. I havent had any experience with it though...
3. Some say this is an over-rated sub... I've heard it once but it was in my box, which ISN'T ideal... so i dunnooo...

i'll agree with bodyjar, though i have no experience with the Xtant, i believe it's over $1000, which keeps in pattern with normal Xtant pricing.
the IDQ is an sq sub. it's not too bad at spl, ask icebreaker, or stone icebreaker sold his IDQ12v2's to stone.
the boston pro sounds great in rekkie's car, i haven't listened to it critcally yet, but it's damned loud, i think he has a RF 300.2 per sub, and 2 of the boston pro 12's.
it sounded plenty clean from where i was standing.

Perhaps also put on your audition list the Hertz AIR MILLE series, these are very musical subs and can be run free air or in a sealed enclosure.

Boom: I heard the 10" version, and yes, they have 10% more surface area than a round 10" sub... As bob said, they do retail for around the $1200 mark...

You mentioned the boston pro 12" sub..why not the IDQ12v2d2 sub? Great SQ and gets darn loud. I had one with 400w in a sealed 1ft^3 and it did a good job...
Addiction made me add the second one..

The IDQ12v2 are good things by all accounts (not heard a lot myself...1 setup which was nice) and well inside that budget.
Alpine DDD if you can get, JohnA uses to very good effect from what I hear.
Ecpipse Titaniums ($$) are good things too.
And yeah, rekkie's Bostons sound good to me...it's what YOU like that will determine it, the biggie is finding a worthwhile demo.

Unreal, i shopped around and found out that the new xtant sub is only $640 dollars...so its not in the $1000's....
so now that the subs r in my price range...
Do u think these subs would be a good choice, over other subs in this price range ie: boston pro, etc..
Also with these subs havin 10 % more surface area than other subs,, would the 10 inch xtant, be equivelent to say the focal 11-inch sub.
Also i only wanted one ten inch sub, so would the DVC xtant be the way to go.
Any replies appreciated..
Cheers,,Da boom4u man

their surface area will have negligible overall benefit in terms of SQ. so it won't affect its tonal quality or power handling. however, SA should contribute to volume.
xtant subs are designed for SQ, so no doubt a fine choice. from all reports, the boston pros are a bit fussy in terms of amp and music (although rekkie is the man to comment). IDQs are excellent value but don't have the same visual impact as the xtants; but they suit a diverse range of boxes and have great SQ.
also consider the kicker squares from what people say.
good luck
