Full Version: Upgrading Sub Amp

I currently have an IX702 (280WRMS) running a Pioneer Bullet Free Air (200WRMS).

i will be upgrading the amps in the future (near far .. dunno yet).

would it be possible to increase SQ with a simple sub upgrade? .. would simply more power (assuming it's of the same 'cleanliness' as the kickers) increase SQ? .. and what specs should i be lookin at (eg dampening factor?)??

should i be looking at a class D or not necessarily?

thoughts and any CONSTRUCTIVE input please.

well i would start looking at a new sud to start with, the amp will make little diference in the SQ especially since u have a decent amp to start with, so the weekest link in the SQ chain would be the sub.

you have 280wrms to play with so most good DQ subs will run off it quite good, all subs love more power than there rated at especially SQ subs, but upgrading them amp sould wait till u have more $$$

A sub upgrade will obviously help with SQ. I'm not gong to say get this brand or that brand, but you will notice the difference with a sub that has a more liner frequency responce then the sub you are running. I had a mate who had some $hit sony sub, went the upgrade to orion, then took it back as he prefered the sony. It all depends as has been said 4982 times on this forum, you like...you buy.
As for your amp not my area, but I would assume that a 2 channel A/B and a class D amp will not make as much diffence to the SQ of your sub output as the sub it's self.
Remember though with SQ all you are really trying to do is create a liner responce accorss all audiable frequencys. However the catch to this is putting the lumps and bumps where you like them.
Hope this helped.

cheers fellas for your input.

but the fact is that upgrading the subs atm is just not goin to happen .. can't afford it and the only free air subs out there even worth upgrading to are Hertz Air Milles .. and they cost an arm and a leg .. expecially for two!!

so i just gotta work with what i got .. and the only component i can upgrade is the amp. i will be definitely upgrading the sub amps coz when i get around to my front stage i will be moving the ix702s to front stage duties.

so since i am goin to upgrade my amp neways and not the subs .. should i be lookin for nething in particular (other than just being a notable brand or whatever) when getting a new sub amp.

just give me suggestions even.

A quality sub amp = $$ any way you cut it.
If you are planning to run 2 subs then a Class D has some great efficiency advantages re: taxing the electrical system less and taking up less space.

Class D = $$.....and basically $1k new price for something worthwhile , or thereabouts. The right thing in the For Sale section could be The Go tho'. There are lots of fine choices in A/B amps too of course.

Methinks you are likely to agree the JL I use does a mighty fine job as an example, but of course the world is a big one with plenty of good choices.

whatever the combo (sub+amp), optimum performance will be gained by having sufficient power for that sub.

i would've thought 200+WRMS would be adequate and that upgrading to a more powerful amp would not yield much benefit. however, this presumes the kicker offers a genuine 280WRMS delivering subbass frequencies into a 12" sub. probably not hard to borrow someone elses more powerful amp to compare (hey, if you were down here, just grab my VRx1.500! ).

otherwise, as mentioned by others, i suspect a sub upgrade would yield more significant benefit. but you'd probably want a better amp too, so it won't be a cheap upgrade in the end.
