what i want to know is where should the tweeter be in relation to the woofer (am talking about splits) i ask this because i have heard numerous sets of splits with the woofer in the door and the tweeter mounted above the dash on the pillar and something doesn't sound right to me
i would have thought the closer the tweeter is to the woofer the more accurate sound you would get, am i wrong???? if not can anyone explain why nearly every set of splits i see are mounted the way i described above???
sorry about the long post.....curiosity got the better of me
Cheers
MrMike

they should be close together as possible, but some people like ot mount them high to raise the stage height.

I think you see so many because many ppl dont know that much about it and so do it how they see others do it.
Putting tweeters up high doesnt really raise the stage height, as a stage is more then just treble.
Anyway I always try and kleep tweeter within a handspan from woofer(6-8 inches max) as other wise you get noticable sepration from high freqs to lower freqs which I am not a fan of.

I had my first set of tweets on the inside of the door mirror sail plane because it didn't leave holes in my door trim, and I think that's it for many.
Take 2 sees them ~16cm from the mids, much better-integrated. I had to "bite the bullet" and make a couple holes, but I'm glad I did.

as discussed, it's often a compromise between optimum position and practicality.
for optimum:
*as close to the midwoofer as possible and same distance from listener's ears (as midwoofer as well): reduces 'separation' and 'phase' issues to improve imaging; co-incidence speakers and coax's have an advantage here
*angled to lift soundstage: roughly aimed at headrest of seat on opposite side
you'll need to experiment heaps with different locations to find what suits your car and installation. most people do this using long speaker wires and blu-tac before mounting them permanently. and having them in the kickpanel areas seems to work nicely for most.

worth doing a 'search' on the subject as it's been discussed a lot in the past.

IMO keep all speakers for any given "stage" as close together as possible, otherwise you end up with bizzare imaging effects. Voices behind you that suddenly jump infront.. things like that.

I had my first tweets in my sails as I had no idea, but now they're down near the mids, although not permanent as I haven't found the best spot for them yet. My sails have nasty holes in them now, but its all for the music right?

Cyberpunky has summed it all up. IMO, those that you see with tweeters mounted higher up are either deaf or have limited mounting options. My cousin used to have tweeters mounted in the dash before he upgraded to decent splits in door pods and after 5 minutes i usually left the car with ringing ears. He used to leave the car grinning (that sums up his hearing).
It's a matter of experimenting although i think you are better off mounting tweeters close to the midrange.

Here here. Tweeters belong in the middle of midbass drivers, ie Kef Uni-Q,(the only ones who ever got it 100% right, as far as imaging goes) failing that, chuck em in the door or kickpanel as close to the midbass driver as possible.

OMG - somebody who actually knows the legendary KEF Uni-Q 160Q drivers!

i own a pair but i no longer have them in my system. the _only_ true co-incident drivers in car audio, but alas no-more. they sounded orgasmic, and imaging was tight and defined, with a wonderfully rich and transparent midrange. while i ended up changing them, they were some of the most live sounding car speakers i have heard. however, their laid-back 'english' sound eventually saw us part

but these were the speakers that made me a co-incident / co-axial believer

I have this problem(I think) My splits are noway near mounted for optimium SQ. I have My woofer flat in the door and my tweets on the dash angled toward the interior light.
When you lean towards the middle of the car(just infront of the H/U) its sounds like they are singing on top of your head

very strange.
I forget what the original post was about, so this was probably a total waste of a post

i got a mate doing the same thing, but he has 6x9's as well so every high hat is like a damn knife in my ear.... and he LoVeS it!. jus makes me apprieciate my system more

tweet position= as close to mid as possible. not jus where looks good. you listen to 'em more than you look at 'em

you're experiencing the sound come from above you because your tweeters are so high and so near glass. you are actually hearing reflections of the tweeters soundwaves bouncing off from the windshield.
the first time i experinced this phenomenon was during a major system overhaul i was doing, all i had were a pair of 6x9's in the rear shelf ti listen to until the install was done. i remember that at certain frequencies (up high generally), it actually sounded like the sound was coming infront of me and to the sides - even though the only speakers were in the back of the car. it soon became obvious that it was reflections i was hearing thanks to the glass.
so this again supports the rule of themb, to be careful with high tweeter locations near glass. they will usualy play against you, but sometimes can be used to your advantage.

They should be exactly where they sound and image best.
Experimentation is the best way to find this location.
Yes, there are some basics that you can follow and are a good point to start from but playing around with things will show you what you can do better.
