not asking for much are you?

see if you can find a 2001 model alpine CDA-7878. RRP last year was ~$1399, so should be <$1K if you can find one.

includes:
*4-channel TA
*7-band graphic EQ
*3x 4V preouts
*xovers
*MP3
*serious SQ!

the current CDA-7893/4 don't have the 7-band EQ, but do have a 2-band parametric instead.

hope this helps.

yeah i think a 7878 is your best bet. i don't think it will be easy to find one though. i think the only other model that fills some of your criteria is the 7998, but a bit out of your price range. i don't think there is any other brand, with those features, in that price range.

Hehe, one of these days shiny will leave something out and give the rest of us something useful to post

*ducks from boss*

The Alpine 7894 (new model of mine with MP3 and TA now) would be my choice at ~$900 street price, everything but the 7 band. The 2 band parametric does a pretty good job in a balanced system. Truly excellent HU's all of Alpine's top range stuff.

oh i forgot to mention that i "hate"
the look of the alpines,
can anybody suggest something else?
what about a stand alone sound processer?
would that be a good idea with the clarion?

the clarion dxz815mp with dph910 would do everything you want and more but you won't get that for under $1000 new

Hate the look of them?
Takes all kinds I guess

EVERYONE that gets in my car says "ooh, nice HU...." whether they know anything about HU's or not. Go figure.

Your eyes and wallet will be your guide, but the Alpines do take some beating at the price at the moment. There ARE other good choices, at a price.....

Graceless
I have the 7878 and one of the features I wanted was stealth or blackout. Does not change the physical but no ligthts.
This is wonderfull for night driving and I think it looks great no flashing lights simple and effective.
It is also supposed to increase procssor power = SQ

And I find it does on my 7876RB, that's how I always use it. But not entirely sure why.....

well ive had a bit of a look around and i ve
found not much that compares to the alpine
with the 7894 what colour is the deck?
as ive looked at different sites and its either black and green or silver and blue?
also whats the difference between the
7894 and the 7893 apart from $200 ?

if i must go with the alpine
its got to be black with amber buttons
to suit my interior
Regards
Trev

Local 7894s are silver/blue, U.S. ones are the black.....dunno about the 7893.
Have you checked Alpine's web sites? links from this site.

as critter said, oz 7894 is silver/blue.

oz 7893 is black/green.

i need a cut and paste for this...

*3x 4V preouts on 7894, fr/rr 2V + subout 4V on 7893
*display blackout on 7894 (more power for where it counts)
*dual illumination on 7893: selectable green/amber buttons
*remote standard with 7894
*cosmetics

both are MP3 compatible, have 4x60W peak inbuilt amps, 4-channel time alignment, and are both excellent.

IMHO, the 7893 is the better value deck. it has all the SQ features you need (incl 2V preouts). the 7894 buys bragging rights though.

Everyone's forgotten the Clarion DRX-9675, there's a FEW left in australia, it *may* just come over your budget (like, $100), but it's an awesome deck, GOOD sq, no speaker outs tho, only pre-outs, nice display and has a 24bit dac, doesn't have time allignment, but does have an 8(?) band graphic eq or a 3 band parametric (one for front, one for rear)...... Has every feature you need, except time alignment.... but, bah... heheehe
Aaron
[edit] oh, no mp3 tho... but you don't get SQ from an mp3!!! [/edit]

the clarion drx-9675z headunit is one of the finest and a joy to listen to - an audible improvement right out of the box and you will never make it clip or skip the dual-EQ's are handy for flattening out response too. as a bonus the display makes setting everything up easy and is good for the wow factor along with the motorisation.

serious SQ source unit if you can still get one

i was just thinking, i don't know of any other head unit that has time alignment other than alpine, let alone with mp3 compatibility. does anyone know of other head units with time alignment?

in my limited experience with the top end pioneers 9350/9450... i would have to say they re a well worthy contender...

i installed a system in HYPERXLs ride consisting of some top end gear

pioneer 9350
dls Magnesium front stage
dls A5 3 channel amp
xtant A series hex 12"

and the head unit was a dream to tune...

automatic EQ with mic is good
plays pink noise and adjusts its own internal 11 or 13 band EQualiser(not completely sure on the no of bands... but it is alot)

huge and easy to use display with the cool but really irrelevant OEL animations (gotta love em tho)

more funcions than u could see if you dedicated a day to it.

5V preouts front rear and sub

manual time allignement up to 15ms (i think may be 10 or 20ms, but its enuff) for full range channels front and rear

and I found that for him for $1000 brnd new... and you can still source them here and there in stores and online new!!!

I give them my full thumbs up for the price...

once we got the time allignment sorted... mainly to drivers seat and let it run its own auto eq response flattening the system sounded sweeeeeeeet!!!!! good wide stage well defined imaging HUGE ambience with no rear fill

BUT THAT IS NOT TO SAY IN ANY WAY ITS ALL ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE HU... The rest of the components were WELL UP TO THE TASK!!!!

it was amazing tho how big a difference the time allignment and eq made for lifting stage and image!!!!!

THATS ENUFF OUTTA ME

The 9350 is a nice unit, but i'm unsure about that 11-13 band equalisation, i think it's 8 band (Had it sitting on my floor for a couple of days, and am sure that was it...)

But it does have manual and preset time alignment...

I'll have a search later on tonight to make sure about the eq... Unless someone wants to prove me wrong before that ;)

If you want mp3 then i think all the models above the 7450 (New model pioneer) play mp3s

the 2001 catalogue lists it as having a 13-band graphic EQ or 3-band parametric, presumably selectable for one or the other.
