Full Version: Rear loading....

As everyone knows, i've had a nightmare trying to mount my alpine type r into my boot because of height restrictions (have only 279mm high worth to fit the sub into...) Now, i tried it today, no way will it fit (i haven't built the box), so i thought of rear loading, but i'm after sq, not spl, and the box was going to be a ported one as it is, sooo, my question, will a rear loading ported box (65L-70L box with 2x5" slot port, maybe) the group delay and all, will it be that bad?! I mean, i'm REALLLLLY running out of options on how to mount my sub, the big magnet gets in the way.... I would have tried other "sq" subs, but they all are too big also, and aren't what i want
Help me!
Aaron
P.S. The sub was going to be mounted on the outside of the box to see the sexxy magnet/motor

why not mount it the otherway and put a window in the box so you can see the magnet?

Yeah man that sounds like a good option just get some 20mm perspex. And put a nice red (i think thats the color of your volvo) neon in it to high light the sub

It's not a matter of mounting the sub, which way, etc, the real issue is the fact that it doesn't, fit under the parcel shelf, at all, no way does it fit any way other than the cone facing up or down... Thats a bit of PITA, but it's more the issue if the rear loading will affect sq that much... I mean, i wanna make it ported and sound good... but... i can only mount it rear loading..... no other choice... unless i change subs
I dunno what to do now....

Well my L7 is rear-loaded and I think most will agree the SQ is kinda "up there".

You do have to be thoughtful about it, but rear-loading and SQ are not mutually exclusive.

if it fits, i would've thought having the sub fire upwards to be fine. and either have the port firing upwards or rearwards.

good luck

Hmmmm..... Interesting idea.... it *might* fit... It'll make a DAMN narrow box...... how much room does there need to be between the sub and the top of the boot?

Actually, rear loading should be good for SQ, as the wave won't have distructive interference.

given the height of the sub is 178mm (from back of mounting flange to backplate) + 17mm (from back of mounting flange onto front of sub/surround) = 195mm = 7.7"

then allow 18mm mdf plus ~2" behind the backplate of the sub and the wall of the subbox = total ~10"

i'd allow at least half the height of the subbox (so ~5") between the sub and the underside of the parcel shelf. so you'd want at least 15" to play with.

but i gather you haven't got that much.

you could consider a wedge shaped box, with the sub predominantly firing upwards, but angled down a bit towards the back of the car.

good luck

I did a whole heap of testing with the subs in the Magna.. firing into the cabin or straight up ended up with bad booming and a very muddy sound. I've ended up going for a rear-load for the sake of smoothness and clarity of bass.. Food for thought
