Full Version: Splits and rears advice

Hey everyone i recently got a system installed in my R33 skyline, from alberts car stereo i found them to be quite helpful and good with the prices.

i got an alpine cda7894rb deck, a rockford 500x amp, 2x rockford he2 12" subs, and alpine spx177a splits in the front.

i originally opted to go for no rear speakers but after a bit of playing around i think i might put some in. I have spoken to alberts and they recomend either alpine type rs or type s's in the back depending on how much i want to spend(= as little as possible ive already spent alot =p) another option is to "downgrade" from the alpine 177a's to mb quarts and then put in some type s's i think without any additional cost, im not much of an audiophile so not sure what to do. the guy i dealt with really likes the spx 177a's and uses them in his own car etc, but i guess they have a fairly large sponsorship from alpine so he is definetly biast.

What do you guys think?
Thanks, Shik

If you shop at Alberts you will be told that it has to be basically either Alpine or Rockford.

I know them well having worked for their organisation many yers ago and having delt with them on many occasions since.

My advice perhaps check with Morley Hi Fi and Car Sound to get a slightly less biased opinion.

Phil

P.S If your dealing with Grant at Morley, he is a pretty straight shooter just ask him to recommend something other than A or RF and you may get a supprise!

well, most enthusiasts will tell you that the front stage (speakers and installation) is the most critical of all speakers.

so you should only ever consider changing your alpine's if you aren't happy with them. otherwise you're losing out big time.

what's more, most people run rear speakers simply for 'ambience'. and many will argue that rears will drag the soundstage rearward, so prefer not to have any.

as such, there's no need to spend big money on rears if you're on a budget. for they have only a minor role.

i'm running some cheapish (<$200) polk 6.5" 2-way coax's for my rears, and they still sound superb running off my nice amps. so anything more would be way overkill...althoug nothing wrong with that.

so my advice would be to keep the spx's if you like them, and only change them if it's for the better (it's quite possible you prefer the sound of some particular cheaper splits). and just go relatively budget with some drop-in rears...if you must.

good luck

If you believe the advice you are being given is biased, then I think you already know what you need to do - seek someone else to ask. One of the hardest things to find in the car audio industry is unbiased advice, as everyone needs to pay their bills, etc - for evry reputable dealer, there is probably half a dozen "questionable" ones.

Find someone you feel you can trust, then you will be happy. Hey, you may pay a few bucks more for something, but isn't peace of mind worth it?

well out of all the shops i went to he definetly gave me the best advice/prices, but im asking here for opinions because at the end of the day it is still his job to sell alpine. I know its mostly a personally thing but listening to the speakers in the store is obviously different to the car, and i dont really want to ask them to take them out put the quarts in and then regret it, so im trying to gain a unbiased consencus on the decision, thanks for the quick answers

Depending on what range of MBQuarts he is refering to, but going from Alpine(even the X series) to MBQuart is more than likely an upgrade. Esp if you are talking about Premium Refrence or Q Series. (even Refrences are on Par with X series)

Once you tell Grant that you don't want Alpine speakers (or in my own words "I think they're crap") Grant will have some good ideas for you.
He's got Focals and I think Infinity also... both excellent speakers. He's got access to almost anything else as well. I bought most of my gear elsewhere because I wanted stuff they don't carry (Morel and Audison) but I have had everything installed there (and a bought a few items there also) because I've found their service is the best in Perth...

Short answer....put the best/most "musical" speakers you can afford in the front.

If that means looking around, then it's time well spent.

well what would be the best/most musical speakers then?

i guess i want to know if anyone has had experience with the spx177a's and how they rate them compared to similarly priced mb quarts.

In the finish, the "pat" answer is always gonna be "let your ears be the judge".

By "most musical" my meaning is the one that makes the music most enjoyable and gives you the best understanding of the intent of the musicians/producers.

The search is part of the fun.

An example: Boston RC620s and Focal 165Ks are both deservedly very popular in the $500-something price class. They are quite different tho', and each suits and "does it" for a different taste. A fan of either would not be "wrong" as such.....

The Boston fx5 or fx6 coaxials (whatever fits) sound good and are less than $200
