Full Version: Monoblock recommendations?

Hi everyone,
Can anybody who's had experience with a 2001 s12l7 give me a recommendation as to an appropriate amp?
I'm considering an mrd-m500 as they are cheap, but as other options I'm considering the lrx 1.400, jl 500-1 and lanzar 1200d.
I'll be running a d4 sub with vc's paralleled in a sealed box. Which of these amps would be best for SQ?
I'll be running hybrid 5s as front stage off an lrx 2.250 when i get the cash but for the moment i just want to make a start with the sub as my front stage is tolerable atm but i want to have some bass.

------------------
Car: Mazda Capella Supercharged Diesel (Not too slow and cheap to run)
H/U: Sony CDX-4005 (It was cheap at the time)
Amp: V-Net250 (To be used for rearfill later)
Sub: None atm considering s12l7
Fronts: Cheap 4" splits off H/U (soon to be rearfill)
Rears: Stock (Disconnected as 5wrms speakers are a joke)

what's your budget?
for ~$2-3000 (i think...) a Vrx1.500 at 2ohm will give you 1000WRMS to play with, which is what the S12L7's are rated to (from memory)

Critter runs his off a JL 500.1, which gives ~620WRMS (i think) into 4, 2 or 1ohm load.
i think his amp was considerably under $1000

Cannot say well enough about the JL 500/1, excellent amp: tight, clean, strong, efficient (doesn't tax the electrical system near as bad as the A/B amp that preceded it). Also very flexible amp for set-up.

The LRx 1.400 would be a good choice too. The others would be good, but I would pick from those 2.

Audison VRx 2.150EX front stage amp
JL Audio 500/1 Class D monoblock sub amp
Front Stage - Morel HCW 6.5 woofers, Morel MT2 tweeters, Morel MX2.2 x-overs.
Rear fill - stockies with power from HU (not that they get any)
Sub - Kicker S12L72 in 75 litre 30Hz slot-ported display box.
Stinger cables and connectors etc

all these amps are very good. and indeed the alpine is excellent value. another good value amp to look out for would be the new coustic class D ones: coustic amps .

of those you list, i suspect the JL would provide the best performance and grunt. the technology packed into that chassis is impressive. and critter's system is testament to it's abilities.

good luck

This is a SQ forum and your talking raw muddy power!

Shame on you Shiney!

If your going to use an LRx later why not keep it matched?
The LRx1.400 is 350 @ 4 650 @ 2 and 900 @ 1 Ohm.

RRP $1039 - CAA Members $935 with a free 4.5m RCA lead.

And they are very clean!

To quote a recent release from Audison.

"We could have taken the digital path, it is much cheaper and easier to construct however, it did not meet our requirement of absolute sound quality."

Has anyone heard both the jl and the lrx running a similar sub to give an opinion as to which sounds better.
Is there any audible benefit from the class ab or does the jl still achieve good cone control.

both will offer excellent cone control, no probs there.

theoretically, the audison will provide a cleaner, less distorted signal. however, there will be much more to the overall SQ than just the distortion/class topology. so the amps may infact sound fairly different, but possibly not coz of the class AB vs class D configurations.

IMO, you will be very happy with either of these amps. they are both excellent.

if the 'power supply' to the amp is of concern (eg: small alternator, old/small battery, thin powerwire, etc), then i suggest the class D will offer better results given that it will require less power to perform optimally (by virtue of being far more efficient).

if you're more a purist, and have the powersupply to back it up (you won't need anything outrageous, just good condition car and at least 4awg powerwire to run both your amps), then consider the audison.

but for me, a big reason would be to cosmetically match both your amps so use two audison's.
