Well, im entering the Maroochy Car Sound SQ comp this week end and was wondering if anyone has any advice in preparing for the comp. EG, set the system up for a certain type of music etc etc.

Any suggestions would be good,
Cheers

Hmm, all I can suggest is not too much bass in the setup. I know I backed mine right off for the last SQ comp.

Just make sure that nothing is overpowering when you play all sorts of music. I assume they'll test it with a range of music - so that's what you should test it with.

I find the range on my Focal test CD works well.

*basically* sit in the car and play real, live music with real people and real instruments. stuff like jazz and blues is always good. make sure all sound is in front of you, that your subs are right down and blend with the front stage, and EQ everything for a smooth, balanced and clean sound. your ears will know it when they hear it.

important thing is to not try and impress the judges with loud sub-bass or bright tweeters - balance is the key.

and whatever you do, don't use synthetic boom-tish techno stuff to tune the system ;)

Normaly the IASCA cd is used but they could use any other test cd, i have even seen the Alpine Highway one disk used.

Get your soundstage right..this will be a single voice going from left, left centre, centre, right centre, righ...or 7 drum beats across the soundstage..hear you will be judged on the width, hight and depth of the soundstage.

Next will be imaging...the voice or drum beat should be easy to pinpoint in the centre of the stage.

then they will play some musical tracks were they will judge on the linearity and spectral balance of the system, this is were everyone else has told you to make sure all frequencies blend in nicely and nothing is too overpowering.

Then they will judge for system noise using a zero data track at all volume levels with engine off and then on.

In some comps they also use an RTA to check spectral balance, pink noise is played through your system and a graph is ploted.

Some also have an SPL section.

Finaly the install will be judged (most likely this will be done first to determine if your install is safe)..so make sure your battery terminals are covered, gromets are used anywere wires pass, inline fuse is of the correct size and correct distance from battery, correct size power and earth cables.
If you fail the safety part of the install you will be disqualified.

Well good luck with it and even if you don't win or place take it as a learning experience and talk to the judges and ask them were you can improve.
