Full Version: Dynaudio Vs Focal

Well, im down to these two deciding on my new front stage as there are no more morels comming into the country until next year

I've currently auditioned the focal uptopia's with u-dimention amps and i was very impressed.. and today i tried to find somewhere that i could demo dyn's, but to my dismay no-one that stocked them had them on their boards..

So im wondering what people think, has anyone done a listen test of these two and compared them?

and if i go with dynaudio what amp would compliment them? as i have heard the focals with n-demension and they sounded fantastic.. i also know focal's US demo car used u-dimention amps... so thats my amp if i go focals..

any advise would be greatly apprecated

I am running the dyns and so can demo for you if you want. Im in Moorabbin area, if thats any help let me know.

Anyway they are both good options, so make sure you get a listen to both so you can make up your own mind.

You will want a good amp with either, but no need to match amps to speakers as both spkrs will work as well of similar amps.

i chose the dyns for a couple of reasons

the first one being that they image so easily compared to the focals...dont bother listening to any speaker on a board because it wont do it any justice
i compared a number of focal cars to dyn cars and every time the dyns seemed to image so much better

the second one being that to me, the dyns seemed more life-like...the focals seemed a bit too metallic sounding compared to the dyns (although they do still sound very very good)

have you listened to any other brands? if you havent, i would suggest DLS, CDT, boston, hertz and mb quartz

I'm looking at a set of dyno's right now... the 240's on sale for 525us with warranty... one thing that sold me on them over the focals is the dyno's tweeter. That thing is sexy and silky...love the tweeter...

but in reality..you cant really decide till ya hear both in the enviroment

i auditioned the focals and dynaudios side by side on a demo board. i was impressed by both, and as it was only a short demo, i don't recall one sounding inferior to the other. they both sounded great on alpines highway one demo disc.

however, i helped do an install involving focal utopia's in the factory locations (mid lower door, tweeter in the sails). this setup just didn't seem to do it justice, too much seperation and hollowness - i think they are far better suited to custom mounting with tweet next to the mid and on-axis. as far as i can tell that is how the crossovers were originally designed anyway.

that, and i have found (as have some others) that the focals have a rather mellow and easy listening character to them, almost laid back, the 'french' sound is similar in ways to the 'english' sound. so this would need to suit your personal tastes. (boston pro's on the other hand have an 'american' signature that is more forward and engaging).

anyway, both these speakers are in the high end of town, so its a matter of having a good hard listen and seeing what gets the emotional attachment happening for you

yes, and i have to admit, ive been to over 20 car audio places in the last week and there were only three where i was impressed with the people i was talking to..
were Freeway, Millenium and stylin

the rest either had no clue, brand pushed, or were just plain rude..

as for deciding about dyns.. i guess ill have to hear some in someones car.. ill be PM'ing cyberpunky me thinks

I was lucky enough to spend quite a bit of time listening to both in road and board. I used the same piece of music which I like to keep a reference.
What ever happens make sure the speakers you are referencing are worn in, my experience with the Dyns is major wear in time. I would suggest 40-60hours+.
I am used to a type of tweeter and the Dyns best suited my taste.
The Utopias and the GT240s were my short list.

I've auditioned them on both a board and in cars, and both are fantsatic speakers. It comes down to personal preference.

To my ears, the dys were 'warmer' and the 'focals' brighter. I prefered the warmer sound so would take the dyns.

You honestly wouldn't go wrong with either of them. Just a matter of taste.

Dyn in a demo board sound like crap!

In a car, where they are designed to be listed to, they sound sweet!

Both are a good speaker, however for natural sound I recon the Dyn have it over the Focals, certainly the tweeter is a much nicer sound to most listeners.

Tough call, but I would say the Dyn!

Thanks Phil! In reality, you need to listen to both, in a car, and see which you like most. One thing to bear in mind, always try and listen to any demo track from start to finish, not just the first 30 seconds, to see if you find the sound fatiguing. Short demo's can be misleading. I don't know about the rest of you, but I tend to listen to a CD from start to finish, not just the first 20 seconds of each track!

My Money would be with the Dyn's for sure. Ive heard them in many a car and never been dissapointed.

As for your choice of amps - get the best you can...

US Amps TU Series or Tube Driver Blue if you like the sound of a vacuum tube.

DLS, Audison VRx, PG Titanium, u_dimension or McIntosh for your transistor based amps.

I recently installed the 3-way Utopia series into my 5992 Integra. Much to my dismay, they were very bright and sparkly. The Focal rep was terrific and took them back, after months usage. I swapped to the Kevlar series 6" 3-ways, these are much better. They actaully have midbass, where as the Utopia does not. And yes doors are fully sound deadened, with plain chant and dynamat and sound off, deadening.

does anybody in Sydney remember a company called Scan Audio and a guy called Leon? They used to distribute Dyn, Infinity Becker and others for both home and car. I had the utmost pleasure of a demo of his Dynaudio and Becker equipped Saab. Becker Solitude (ver} rare) deck and Becker Energy aops with Dyn speakers. all standard locations with no custom work. I've judged pro for tiree years, when i was still judging (remember iasca?) and in all that time there weren't too many cars near that one. Eventually my old faithfu| 'BlackąSeries' Alpines will want to retire and when they do (sometime sooner than later) it's Dyn with Soundstream Exact.

Leon is alive and well and now has his own company that are Ausvralian agents fr Becker. The company is Sound labs group. Scan was sold and is no more. I have dealt with Leon since his days with Scan and still do today, as Becker is the only HU brand I sgll.

The saab had a wicked system but I am sure the speakers are actually Becker too. I also know that although they had becker printed on them they were$actually Dyns, but made for Becker by Dynaudio(unlike morel which uses Dyn technology but are made by Morel)
