the idea you had in mind when installing/selecting components.

what makes an SPL system an SPL system?
the perspective with which you selected components and carried out your install

To be a pure "instrument tested" sq system, the RTA MUST read as flat as possible, in listening tests the Accuracy of staging, imaging, etc, is tested, they play reference tracks and most of the judges close their eyes to try and locate each individual instrument and when listening to an SQ System, you shouldn't be able to "locate" where the speakers are by listening to them, this is known as "transparency" and you should be able to locate approx. where each band member is standing, and what instrument they are playing. The trick with SQ, is to incorporate all these into one, however, it is quite difficult due to the comprimises made in the car environment... Trying to make a loud note at say, 50hz, is spl, trying to make a note sound just as loud at 30hz as it is at 15khz, thats sq.......

can u make that a little more simple for me?? hehe

well me and alot of others idea of SQ is when u are sitting there in the front of your car, you close you eyes and there is the singer in front of you, the band is sitting there too, every little detail of sound is coming out of the speakers, and all of the sound you cant here is there too

(which is another debatable thing, but i belive it makes the difference)

everything sounds just perfect (and i dont belive i need a judge at a comp saying it isent, but i wanna win trophys)

it is something you can listen to for hours on end and not get tired from it,

something that makes you wanna get out your fav CD and go for a drive to nowhere just so u can listen to it,

it's just good!

just for the record, a flat reading on an RTA sounds terrible, and 'transparency' is generally used to describe the ability of a system to pass on the original performance to your ears without adding any colouration itself (ie, if a system is 'transparent', it means you only hear the original performance, not the speakers or amp etc) the phenomenon where you can't hear the location of the speakers, ie where the sound stage floats on the dash in isolation of the speakers, is usually described as 'the speakers are not easily localised'. ie, transparency and localisation are not one and the same

well at least that's how i was taught

Whether it is SQ or SPL you are chasing, the very best/loudest/whatever takes time, money expertise, experience, experimentation and a lot of hard work and head-scatching.

IMO there is no "this is harder" coz it's all hard at the limits of the envelope of performance, whether you are finding the last couple of dB or fine-tuning the image. If any of it was easy, anybody could do it and where would the pleasure of achievement be?

Satisfaction is all in the perception of the beholder/perpetrator.

Want to find out if your system qualifies as SQ?
Play some good classical music and see if the strings sound like strings.
If there is a killer bass track coming through while playing Mozart then your system needs a little more refinement and tuning!

in other words purps, an SQ system plays *MUSIC* in high fidelity, and not just BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

A small "refinement" to fuddbutter's observation.....

When people ask me "why did you go to all that trouble and expense?" I say because it turns every drive into a special occasion, and it does
What more could you want?

And PuRpS is I believe "getting with the SQ programme", he has Morels now.....well last time I saw him he did

easy,
the ability for your system to accurately
reproduce a recorded peice of music.
it does not matter how it is acheived $$$ as long as it can do it.

What makes my system a SQ system is that its only job in life is to play music. Hopefully it does it well, but its not designed to just play 57Hz ;)

some classical music has been known to go down as low as 5Hz and any music with pipe organ in it properly recorded can go to 16Hz (16Hz is the lowest it can go, cant remember the tech facts ATM)
