Full Version: Crossovers- do they make a difference?

I will be purchasing a set of MB Quart RSC 213's (reference series) this week, used. I removed them from nico's 7-series when they were written off, and i could not remove the MBQ crossover without removing the footwells for some reason.

As such they will be used with a JBL GTi series crossover, with exact same freq. cutoffs as the MBs. What i am asking is will it make a huge difference to SQ? Maybe im just being pedantic but i hope its cool.

Pete.

provided they have are at the exact same frequencys and have the same slope then it should be ok

I doubt the JBL unit uses the same quality components as the MB unit and so the MB unit would be ideal but it wont cause any problems using the JBL unit, so hook it up and see if it sounds OK. If it does then your golden
peace

couple things to bare in mind:

*speaker impedence varies the xover freq; so it will be sweet if the MB quarts are the same impedence (per speaker) as the JBL are meant to be; near enough should be good enough
*speaker sensitivities will vary from brand to brand, and the xovers may have attenuating resistors/L-pads to allow for this; in which case the balance of the MB quarts may be a little out of whack

definitely worth a try though.

I don't know the two speakers in question personally, but I've got some input for you in a general sense.

I had a set of Boston Pro splits, my friend had the Boston Rally series splits. When I became car-less for a while, he asked to borrow the x-overs and try them on his system.

It made an absolutely huge difference! I've never had an a/b test that yielded such dramatic results!

This may or may not have any direct relevance in your set-up, but "yes, crossovers can have an effect on SQ"

crossovers are very important for optimal sound quality, especially coherance, fluidity and linearity across the spectrum. remember there is more to a crossover than cutoff points and slopes, the phase relationship between each driver (tweet and mid) is vital and must be taken into consideration. also the higher quality of the caps and coils make a difference to overall transparency.

experiment and see how you go
