Ok how good/bad would a free air sub mounted where the spare tyre would normally be(in the bottom of your boot) sound.

i think it'd work out ok, but it would end up more like a small sealed enclosure. you would need to reinforce all the steel surrounding it to stop it flexing for a start, but certainly has been done before

the key with a free air sub is to seal off the front of the cone from the back, so as long as you did this it would work fine. i expect most speaker engineers make IB subs with the expectation that a boot cavity would be the size of the air behind it, so using a spare tyre well, and sealing off the baffle, may produce unexpected results due to the smaller space.
if you want to use the spare tyre well, you may be better off with a sub designed for sealed enclosures, and to fibreglass a moulded enclosure in the spare tyre well

On the other hand, if you wanted to make a biiig effort, a spare tyre well could concievable be used as the basis for an Aperieodic enclosure, venting towards the ground outside of the car.
This would take some skill with a welder, your petrol tank might be in the way, you'd have to get an engineering certificate to make sure the cars roadworthy again etc etc, but all those things aside, it could be done......
