Full Version: Type S vs Type R

So what's the difference (audibly) between the Type S range of speakers and subs versus the Type R range of speakers and subs? Why would a Type R 12" sub be better than a Type S sub?
Sonic Nirvana
Both Type S and Type R are good drivers.

Over and above the S, a Type R has a stronger/bigger motor, cast frame, longer and more linear excursion, better power handling yada yada.

It is basically a more thoroughly engineered thing which will do a bit more and a bit better, audible yes, earth-shattering difference no, IMO, certainly with the subs.

Front stage speakers will be a more audible difference, how important will go to taste, there is a basic level of component quality difference tho'.

yeah, build quality is partly where the added expense goes. worth comparing them to see how impressive the type-R is. and certainly a stronger basket leads to less resonance and a tiny bit better performance.

the type-R also has greater power handling (300 vs 200WRMS), with potential to go louder. box requirements differ, with the type-S limited to sealed for optimum SQ (eg: 1.8~2.5cuft; smaller if need be). the type-R suits either sealed or ported, but ported will definitely provide superior subbass (eg: 2.5cuft tuned to 28; could be smaller too).

so if you have the power and the budget, and happy to build a ported box, then the type-R looks to be ideal.

good luck

ive heard systmes with both subs, and IMO the type R just sounded alot tighter and had alot more presence the the S. as for the splits, i havent heard the s's but i had a listen to the type r splits at northfield the other day and to tell the truth i wasnt overly impressed. i think they sounded very harsh and overly bright, and lacked midbass. but thats just my opinion.
