Full Version: Two midbass, one tweeter?

One of my tweeters just died in my splits... so I immediately replaced them with a new set of the same 6" Infinity Kappa splits But now I have two spare 6" drivers, one spare tweeter, and a desire to try them all on the back shelf of the Datto

Will it work wiring up the two drivers and a single tweeter from 3 channels of the deck? I'm thinking it should work fine unless I adjust the balance off centre?

It's in a Datto 120Y sedan with Infinity Kappa 6" splits up front, and a Polk Momo 10" in the boot, all running off a Response 4x100rms. The deck is a high end Panasonic.

No no, you don't wanna try running them like that, and you certainly dont want to listen to Shiny.
You wanna PM me about the 6"s & Xovers with an indication of what price you desire for them

being an SQ forum, i don't quite understand why you would want so many drivers and so much volume coming from behind you?! unless your running 5.1 DVD-Audio (i don't know of anyone who is) you probably don't need all that cone space on your rear deck.

instead, i'd consider adding them to your front stage (if you must use them) for mid-bass reinforcement and possibly as ambient drivers to raise stage height

Well it doesn't go in the SPL forum... and the question pertains to whether it will sound right... so the SQ forum seems best.

It's a cheap and nasty system for my runabout man, not a well thought out, well designed system for SQ

In the end I'm more likely to buy a set of Polk Momo tweeters and run them either up front or with the midbass in the back. As I tracked down the manual for the Panasonic deck I found out that it actually has a centre speaker output... so I'll probably slap the spare tweeter in there and see what happens. (I know it would sound better with a midrange, but I don't have one laying around... nor do I have a screen or DVD plaver)

I'm not designing it for 5.1 as its in a Datto... and its intended purpose is a lightweight performance beast, which means no SD and lots of rattles. Basically I'm just playing around with a fwe different set-up for fun

ahh, i see now experiment away then!

i believe some of the panasonic decks had a flip-out centre speaker built into the headunit, but didn't know they provided an output for an external one - very interesting! you could hook up that tweeter you have, and rather than run it as a centre channel (which it won't work well as) use it as a ambient tweeter to fill in the centre a little but provide greater height and width.

I've found that Infinity Kappa tweets tend to be very very bright and can over power alot of midbass if just wired straight throught the passive x. That was why I was gonna put it on the back shelf so it won't be so intrusive.
But with only 5Wmax it should go ok in the centre console yeah?

id be putting the extra mids in the front doors, multiple mids look scheksie as!
sorry to hijack the post, but what exactly is an "ambient satelite"??

ambient satellites are simply an extra set of speakers (usually tweeters) that are placed seperate to the primary (main) speakers, with the purpose being to raise the perceived stage height and width. also commonly called ambient tweeters these are often placed on the dash, in the door sails, etc, and are set at a significantly quieter volume than the main tweeters.

pope - feeding only 5w max actually wouldnt be that much quieter than normal amp power, as tweeters down require much juice to get going. but give it a try, expermient with different locations around the centre console or dash (this is easy with a tweeter) and see how you go. also, try aiming it away from you too, sometimes reflections can be used to your advantage and to help the tweeter melt away into the sound stage. but dont expect a miraculous centre image, it will be more useful for raising the stage height and filling in the centre a little
