Hi everyone,

I've got the speakers and all for my install, and I've installed the rear speakers as they old ones were real crape, so I decided to replace them and now in their place are a nice set of Pioneer TS-E1695 6.5" 3-ways. I want to fit the front stage soon enough, but looking at the door (after taking of the door trim), it looks like it's not going to be as easy as I'd hope for, as the speaker location makes the speakers fire directly at the knees, while the tweeters will be mounted in the factory door tweeter location. How do I get to front speakers to get to angle properly for a sweet sounding front stage?

well pods would be your first stop me guessing? either that or mount the speakers on an angled baffle in the doors, but pods would still probably be better

not knowing what the doors are really like, it's a bit hard to provide heaps of advice.

as mentioned, if new pods, locating the woofer at the bottom-front of the door can be made/used, then consider that. otherwise, make do: if space behind the stock trim allows, then build an angled mdf mount, even if it's 10~20 degrees. cut 2 rings of mdf, and join them on an angle using mdf spacer-blocks to support the gap; i filled the space between the mdf with expanding foam (judicious amounts) and it worked a treat.

if there's no room, and you are limited to the stock location, then instead concentrate on sound deadning the doors, sealing them, and at least mount the woofers on an mdf ring which is more solid, and doesn't resonate, compared with either plastic or metal.

what's the stock tweeter location? ideally mount them in the kickpanel region or down infront and below the woofers. although taking the time to experiment with different locations (eg: have the tweets temporarily wired with long lengths of wire, and use blu-tac) and angling to find the best position would be worthwhile.

good luck

Thanks guys,

I've pulled the door trims off, and from what I can see, I can remove the factory speaker chambers (it only fits the factory stupid-sized 4.25" speakers) and hopefully put in the spacers. Is it legal to drill holes in the door to fit the spacers? Because I heard that cutting larger holes in the doors isn't legal. I'm trying to keep a factory look, so I'll most likely get the spacers and try to angle them towards me. However, on my head unit (Pioneer DEH-P9350), I'm able to specify how far the speakers are away from the drivers seat. Would this be a suitable form of angling? I'm not really minding if the front stage isn't as accurate as possible (not entirely off either though!) just as long as I can maintain a factory look (i.e. no custom pods unfortunately).

Well as I've said I've installed the back speakers with not much problem, but I'll pull out the interior again to sound deaden the whole thing, as parts of the car (mainly the rear parcel shelf) start to rattle slightly with the new speakers.

Cheers guys

drilling holes is fine. i'm not sure on the exact technicalities, but i figure any mods that potentially affect the structural integrity of the doors is 'out' (without a suitable eng cert). but drillholes is the 'done thing' for car audio, so no probs.

that would pioneer's proprietory 'time alignment'; alpine use a similar setup. this is designed to improve the soundstage.

angling speakers does also contribute to soundstaging and imaging, and they both can work together in an additive fashion. so one won't replace the other, and both can help.

as you've discovered, 'practicalities' usually limit what we can do with our speaker installations, but that's all part of the challenge.

good luck

hmmm, i dont think time alignment is proprietory, its a general standard for delaying the arrival of sound for any particular speaker, everyone is providing it now, pioneer, alpine, clarion etc. much like equalisation is not proprietory, its an open format.

(the exception is when time alignemment, equalisation, phase, reverb etc are used in specific patterns, and are then licensed as proprietory, like clarions VSE, the BBE used by alpine, dolby noise reduction, etc etc.)

fair call.

and the only difference, say between pioneer and alpine TA, is the 'setting up' on the HU. pioneer require you to manually plug in the distance each set of speakers is from the listening position. alpine require you to manually plug in the time delay for each set of speakers; the units (milliseconds) are in keeping with the function, but requires you to have a calculator and simple forumula infront of you. some of the alpine processors have a microphone for autosetup instead. not sure with clarion.

People people people...TA is one thing but there's no substitute for getting it close to right straight off the bat...it's just a band aid IMHO...
Anyhoo...Soarer...if all you're after is a half decent image, why not try adding some "ambient" tweeters (up high) after
you mount the front stage? Cross em over real high (>8kHz), adjust the level and bingo! the stage should be at dash height. The only drawback is that the image accuracy won't be that great...better than having the musicians at your knees
Otherwise, fade the level of the tweeters on the three ways and add the tweeters (that is, play with the volume of the tweeters)

Thanks for the help guys!

I'll see what I can do with these speakers. Are there any specific speaker mounting angles needed to get a nice and decent front stage?

I've done one part of the install, hopefully I'll be able to do this one too!

as little as 15 degrees can be enough but if it fits you can go up to 45 degrees from vertical and then twist the speaker 45 degrees rotationally towards rear (clockwise on driver side and anticlockwise on passenger side). So speaker aims towards to listeners or centre of cars roof.

Damn it would be so much easier to draw a diagram
