Full Version: Alpine Commanders?

Slappin Rex
Hey all,

Just looking for some information on the following.

CTA1502E Digital Commander/Receiver
CHAS614 Compact Disc Changer

-Immaculate condition
-Have Receipts
-Paid $1250, looking for offers

That is the ad that I saw and was wondering what type of setup this is? I understand that it's a CD stacker but can't find any more information on the thing. Also what is the guy on about by saying it's a commander reciever thingo? I am guessing it means that it's basically a deck which doesn't have a single slot type thingo on it......???? Only runs the other sources such as the CD Stacker for CD's etc.

But the main thing i want to know is this any good to use as a base to a good AV system?? I only want to be able to play movies on a 7" widescreen with true 5.1 and have the car setup for SQ. Thats my only goals. THANKYOU ALL!

Rex.

P.S Playstation2 will be doing the DVD'ing.

whilst the 1502 is an excellent component, it's not [i]really [i]suited to your needs.

it was available as part of the '98 alpine range, with SQ in mind. but by today's standards, is pretty low on features. it was essentially a tuner and controller; no CD. the tuner was a good one though!

it's Ai-NET, so able to control stackers, processors, etc. 4V preouts, good internal power supply,, and good display.

but no auxillary input, no EQ, no time alignment, no dolby digital processer, etc, etc.

the S614 stacker is also pretty good, also available in the '98 range. however, alpine has since upgraded it's DAC from this 1-bit to the M-DAC version.

if you want true dolby digital 5.1 surround sound and multimedia, then you need to have at least the following:

*monitor/screen: whether it be a stand alone screen or an indash fold-away; will have suitable video input
*source: DVD source; industry standard for ICE is fibre-optic digital output; video output to plug straight into monitor
*processor: DTS processor with digital input to process DVD into 5.1 channels, offering 6-channel preoutput (fr-rr L-R, centre, sub)
*preamp/controller: typically a HU that can control the volume of the stereo/surround system
*amplification: amps for all 6 channels
*speakers/sub: fr-rr L-R, centre, sub

to have all of this integrate takes a complex system, and a 'one-brand' setup for the screen/source/preamp/processor is easiest. but it can be done with the PS2.

many options, including:

A.
1. indash all-in-one monitor-controller-DVD player
2. DTS processor with 6-channel output

6.5" kenwood KVT-940DVD + KDS-P900 processor (RRP$6299+769)

clarion VRX925VD + DVH920 (RRP$4599+TBA)

i believe alpine will be releasing something similar too.

B.
1. indash monitor-controller
2. processor
3. stand alone DVD source: PS2, other

best with a combo of same-brand controller-processor. including alpine, pioneer, clarion, kenwood, etc.

for alpine:
*Ai-NET monitor-controller: CVA-1003E (RRP$1999), IVA-C800E (RRP$3549), CVA-1006E (RRP$2699)
*processor: PXA-H510 (RRP$1399), indash PXA-H700 (more expensive), PXA-H900 (forget it?)

C.
1. stand alone monitor
2. HU-controller
3. processor
4. DVD source: PS2, etc

so you can match a normal alpine Ai-NET HU with an alpine processor and control the system, selecting for the DVD/PS2; preferably a HU that's from at least the 2001 range (as the Ai-NET system was upgraded slightly). i only presume that you can make the processor select for the PS2 as the input; something you'd have to check, coz the HU will not directly control/select the PS2.

clarion, kenwood, pioneer have similar 'bus' systems to add multimedia to existing HUs.

in my own setup that i will install, my alpine HU can control the new processor, allowing selection between DVD, CD, etc. i now have an Ai-NET DVD stacker for better integration instead of the PS2 for DVD (will retain for games though). the configuration i had for Final Battle was only for stereo (2-channel) DVD audio, and not DTS 5.1.

hope this all helps. i can probably elaborate on the alpine setups if you want.

i used to have a 1502E.
was a nice deck.. sexy display.

the 1505 would be better. and it

i sold mine with stacker for $600 about 18 months ago.
this deck set up is over 3 years old now.

From memory it was essentially the alpine top end deck, minus the CD player.

def a nice deck, kinda regreted selling it in hinde sight. But shi1t happens.

$500 is the most i'd pay.

Thankyou for the big old schpeal there Shiny Mullet. Thankyou also to Icey for making me see that yes that 1502 is going to be about as handy as the nipples on a pitbull.

Basically I will be waiting now till I get the new car to make judgement (pending on the ability and how viewable a monitor will be in dash Vs on Dash). At that point I will report back but in the mean time that stuff you have mentioned is gold and has cleared this whole thing up for me.

Presuming I find $15k in the back pocket tomorrow I will be getting....

1. Alpine CVA-1006R - Controller / Monitor
2. SBS-1705 - Center Channel and Amp
3. PXA-H510 - Processing and Decoding
4. PPI PC2150 to Boston Sub (Already Done)
5. Hertz H-420 to Dyn240MK's and Boston Rears
6. Playstation 2 - DVD and Games
7. Big Type-R Sticker On Rear Panels - Gives me 23kw, better SQ and adds 12db to SPL.

Righto so is that all the crape I need or am I still not understanding this configuration thing right?

Cheers
Gordon.

looks good.

the only issues you need to determine are:

*CD player: i presume you'll add a stacker; this can be plugged into the processor via Ai-NET and be controlled from the 1006
*selecting to play DVDs: this is the bit i'm unsure about; whilst you can hook the PS2 into the processor, i'm not sure how you make the processor switch to read it (eg: instead of the CD stacker); no Ai-Net HU can obviously control the PS2, but they may/may not control the switching inside the processor; as opposed to an alpine DVD player that's integrated via the Ai-NET cables; it's possible that the processor automatically switches to DVD the moment it senses a fibreoptic input (i think this could be the case); the manual for the PXA-H510 does not explain it

also ensure the 1006 and H510 are available in the near future. they are already considered 'superceded' to my knowledge, so stocks could be dwindling. which could only leave the far more expensive H700 as your only choice (which is also an indash unit).

good luck
Slappin Rex
Thankyou again shiny mullet I have PM'd you again this morning after finding a nice Pioneer setup to go for. If the pioneer idea falls through then I will go back to the Alpine gear and will let you know..

Cheers
Gordon.

yeah i've got a pioneer set up in mind, but can't afford the $2,300 at this point.

(getting next car is a far higher priority atm)
Slappin Rex
I'm hopefully going to get that $2300 setup for this. But I don't think that will make me an SQ King as such. I don't know if the Pioneer gear like that is great for SQ. Very flexible to install and the features allow you to alter all speakers EQ and Time Alignment etc. So i will have plenty to play with.

It's all pending the loan talks today and wether or not I can actually get the new car I want. That will all be sorted by the weekend.

Cheers
Rex.

good luck rex.

whilst multimedia gear is typically less SQ-biased, it's all still excellent stuff that will sound great. you're unlikely to be disappointed in that department.
