I currently hvae a V12 T420 Powering my S type splits but i'm looking to upgrade, what do you guys think of the SPX-177A 6-1/2" splits??
shiny_car
from all reports, the SPX splits are very, very nice. but with a RRP of $999, you'd hope so!

whilst i notice you love your alpine (who doesn't ), don't limit yourself to alpine for the sake of it.

so definitely worth auditioning as many splits as you can to make a better decision.

in that price range, you can have the likes of:
*dynaudio system240 7" 2-way splits
*focal 165W utopia 6.5" splits
*boston accoustic pro series
*dls, hertz 3-way, morel, AVI, etc

i personally love and use dyn's. midbass is excellent, clarity and warmth superb. currently powered by my old-school alpine MRV-1000, they are very dynamic and revealing.

so hop to it...audition away!

thanks mate
yeah, i know i really *shouldnt* limit myself... but i swayed around from alpine about this time last year and i wasnt satisfied.. when into the likes of kicker etc looking for more bang for my buck.... it then cost me heaps of money to get back to where i was in the first place *lol* depressing story too often heard i spose...

but yeah i will have a look at wat else is around.... are focals nice speakers?? also i heard mtx make some nice splits, right or wrong?

some websites to look at would bee wonderful
shiny_car
i've not auditioned mtx splits. but they're not renowned for SQ ones, not to say they'd be bad.

focal are excellent. a specialist speaker manufacturer, much like dynaudio and morel.

website links are in the 'links' section up top.

You will find plenty to choose from with a nice healthy budget such as you seem to have. We are lucky in Perth - if you look around a little you can find some very nice splits up on sound boards (or even in cars) just waiting for you to come along and demo. Definately don't limit yourslef to Alpine just because of a past experience, and also don't limit yourself to one particular retail shop - they sell what they sell, and will always tell you jow great it is (hey, they gotta make a living too!)

As shiny said, get out and start listening and you might just be amazed at what you find Good Luck!

i would go for focal, but i have 2 sets of alpine spx-177a's in my car i pretty sure that you can get them real cheap i paid around $500-600 for mine but ive seen them at alberts for $699 a few months ago.so just shop around i dont recommend picking a speaker from what they sound on a board they will sound very differant in a car.

If you like the sound of Alpine speakers then I would probably steer clear of Focals... correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure all the alpine splits use soft dome tweets... If you're used to soft dome tweeters, then you may very well not like the sound of the aluminium domes on the focals...

I can highly recommend dynaudios. I currently use them, and they are by far the smoothest, warmest and overall most pleasant speaker I've ever used. (My ears are especially sensitive to high frequencies, so I really don't like aluminium/titanium tweets.) DLS also make some great splits right in your price range...

well i can safely say i am sold now on these splits.... the dealer took the time to put them into my car today as i was willing to lay down a deposit and they sounded amazing

shiny_car
