Full Version: tuning my new amp

with the previous amp i think i got the settings to just where i like it. it had 12db/oct on both HP and LP and i had my splits at 70 while my sub at 60. sounded quite good and blends in so well everytime i look at my splits i keep think the bass hit is coming out of it but i know for sure its the sub. even my friend commented on this sayin subs sounds like it from front, weve all had badly tuned system previously so was big difference

neway my new amp has 12db hp and 24db lp and had little muck around with it and still dun think it sounded as good as my old amp. i found when sub was lp bit high bass starts to lose control and jumped everywhere, move it down to bout 65 and beat was more constant the way i like. is this right? splits was hp i dunno where since there was a small moving gap between the 65-150Hz marking. overall sounded similar but i have feeling old setup was bit better

can some show me a position for the xover i can try and c if it sounds alrite
maybe i gotta let someone have a listen and set it up nicely for me oneday
or maybe i just need few more days to sit down properly and listen to it

what components are they? amp, splits, sub?

i generally tune the splits first, disconnecting the sub altogether.

depending on the amp power and splits powerhandling, i set the gains first, using an overly high HP setting (eg: 150Hz). then you know any distortion is from clipping rather than the speakers being overdriven; you obviously shouldn't and wouldn't do it this way if you knew the amp is far more powerful than the splits, where the amp could overpower the splits well-before it clips.

then i start to slowly work the HP setting down..

the compromise comes between having more midbass and premature distortion. so if it goes loud enough for you without distortion (from over-excursion of the woofer), then trim the setting down further. and i expect 70~80Hz will be ideal as you've previously found.

then work on the sub. i'd start with a very low LP setting and work your way upwards. so maybe 50Hz, then trim it up until it blends with the splits as you want. given the very steep LP filter, i expect it needs to be set closer to the HP than with your older amp.

i would have thought the HP/LP combo of 70/60 or 80/70 to be ideal.

adjusting the gain of the sub will also impact on how balanced it all sounds. so needs careful tweaking too.

and indeed it can be worth having more experienced 'ears' help you out. so attending a local CAA Meet is good for that, grabbing someone you know who can help.

good luck
