i'm not much of a SQ person. but IMO go for a 10" sub as these generally sound more tigher than a 12" sub.
Alpine VR sub 10" if you can still find one wouldn't be too bad i spose in a small sealed box. they sell for $129 brand new up here.

what is your budget?

DLS, OZ Audio, Phoenix Gold, PHD, Velodyne, HSU, just to name a few that spring to mind. Remember that enclosure design and construction will play a major role, as well as the quality of power you are feeding it (although a non-sq sub will never be as good as an sq sub in an equally good enclosure).
Good luck in your search. It is hard to find people/places that know much about quality gear and specific applications.

I disagree, i find that the old VRs are nothing by comparison to a single 10" R Type.

When i had a sub, it was a 10 inch..But i reakon a single 12inch sub is the way to go. Have you looked at the boston pro sub - the 12inch goes for around $600.

I reckon you might want to look down the Focal range a bit... depending on your budget of course.
I run PolyKevlar splits in the front doors and a 13" Polyglass sub - and it all blends quite nicely.

ProTech mentioned some very good suggestions.
It all depends on your budget. A JL W7 is great if you can afford it.

BDL here in Canberra are selling the Focal 27H 11" subs for $310 - I think they are running them out in readiness for new Focal's arriving.
I have a 27H in a sealed enclosure (yeah, yeah, I know that Focal says that it's for a ported enclosure, but the params are OK for either sealed or ported) and I love it - really nice sub.
Another one to think about, anyway.

well basically the stuff i listen to is as follows
The early Dave Matthews band stuff i strongly suggest this music to sound quality entusiests it has some of the best mixs of instruments put together i have ever heard.
Songs include: Ants Marching, 41#, stay
A type R 10 is not out of my budget but i used to own a type r in a 12 but sold casue it wasent me.
Im really interested to hear your thoughts on Focal subs if anyone has any info or advice it would be appreiciated as i think i want to keep all focal the whole way through in terms of speakers.

lotsa guys i know in Indonesia use focal utopia subs. its needs a huge ported box but it sounds damn fine. its beautiful bass throughout. but the it wasn't has loud and authoritative as i expected it to be though.
thats why i opted for two tens in a ported enclosure. i prefer ported for the super low frequency extension(especially for R&B). i in the end i went for the two Xtant 104x subs and they are fantastic. me opinioin anywayz. the only sure way i guess is to audition for yourself

you'll also want to match the sub to the subamp in terms of power. so no point buying a premium SQ sub that thrives on an abundance of power...if you don't have it.
no doubt budget will be a big determinant. you might need to spend $1K for the combo of sub + amp for something very nice, and could easily double that. but if on a tight budget, choose carefully, and you'll still get high quality subbass.
regarding your old type-R, maybe the box didn't suit your tastes?
and i figure you're front stage amp is the MRV-T420. which, for RMS specs, is 2x75WRMS at 12V. plus there's not much 'digital' about it.

JL are a good sub and have been used in SQ systems before but there are mixed opinions on them. I would audition any sub properly before buying it as in the end you will be the one listening to it. To you, the JL may stand out as best.
