Hi Guys
Normally I'm big on SPL but in the interests of making a system that sounds better I disconnected my rear fill (Alpine s series 6" coax) to try and bring the sounds stage forward. The sound stage is now forward but it sounds crap. I seem to have lost all midbass (fronts are Alpine 6.5" s series splits). Would sound deadening the front doors improve mid bass? Any thoughts or suggestions cause I'm trying to make a nice sq car that can be used for spl on occasions.
go to the one of the crosssovers and change around negative and positive cables running to one of the woofers.
It does sound like a phasing problem and that should fix it straight away.

well, if midbass is the problem, there are few things you can try:
*tuning the xovers optimally: it's a balance between powerhandling (set too low, and it will rob the splits of powerhandling due to too much bass) and having some decent midbass (not filtered out!); usually a typical 12dB/oct HP filter can be set to 80~100Hz
*solidly mounting the speakers: crucial in allowing the energy from the VC be used to move the cone for music, and not vibrate the speaker/mount that's loose or flimsy! mdf baffles/mounts are very, very good as a solid mounting base; secure the mdf to the door, then the speaker; use foam-rubber stripping as a gasket/seal between all surfaces
*sealing the door: cover big service holes to simulate a sealed enclosure; 3mm mdf is ideal, especially if also sound deadened; preferably paint all raw mdf with wood primer to prevent moisture damage
*sound deadening: creates a solid enclosure; this also minimises loss of sound energy being converted to kinetic energy, which relates to reducing resonances and vibrations; also accounts for reducing the 'hollow' sound to speakers
so any/all of these areas can be addressed to help your midbass.
good luck

HELLO, someones realised that rear fill is detrimental to the sound stage. Why are Aussies hung up on rear fill... Sorry 'bout the hijack...

I think maybe the best answer lies in your sig - perhaps its just me, but I dont se an amp mentioned to run those splits! Amp them up, give them sound sound deadend (is that a word?!?) and hear them thump like never before. Of course, a front system upgrade could be on the cards too.
But my opinion - an amp long before anything else Doesn't need to be anything huge, just a quality unit putting out around 2x50WRMS or so should make a huge improvement.
Also... Thinking back about ummm, 5 years ago or so when I last used Alpine, the 's-series' didn't come with a proper crossover. Add a nice one of them in while your at it for sure.

Thanks Paul. That's what I was thinking. Now I just need a cash injection for a new sub amp and then the current sub amp (2x150) will power the front splits (with the gains turned down).

Bah if your frounts cant handel a gaycar 2x150 get decent splits:) No hu amp will give everything a system needs. What i did to improve my midbass was to play arround with my hu functions. Some options can assist in boosting some areas and oftern its best to turn doen the things that dont need improvement and then be able to turn your system up louder(on the hu scale) that you ould previoulsy.

lancer guy - Sounds like a good step to take. Sure you would be better off with a higher quality front stage amp (I don't think the Jaycars have teh cleanest output), but the Jaycar will certainly 'do the job'! Feeing those splits a little real power will create a whole new sound system for you. That will allow you to get yourself a better suited amp to run your subs, and shuldn't cost you too much overall. Good Luck
