Anyone know how good the new range of orion subs are for SQ, I have the XTR like the sound but a 15inch is too big for the new install. Money will be tight but should be able to send around 700-800 on the subs (each).
Any help would be apreciated, I don't really want to look at other brands until I know that the orion are cactus.

Orion to me have always come across as an aggressive SPL based company, not SQ based. The company motto sums it all up:

"Loud, Obnoxious, Aggressive, Competitive...
If this is your attitude then welcome to Orion".

Having said that you may be able to get their subs to work in your SQ setup. Don't limit yourself though, there are many reputable SQ brands out there. Audition subs from Boston, JL, Image Dynamics, DLS, Phoenix Gold, Soundstream and Focal to name a few. You have a healthy budget so you will end up with good subs no doubt.

if you have the relevant thiele-small specs (Fs, Qts, Vas) you can model their frequency responses on programmes like WinISD or Bass Box Pro.

this can go some way towards predicting if they'll perform nicely as an SQ sub. coz some SPL-biased subs look to have large peaks in output (for a reasonably sized box and tuning frequency) that probably sound less than ideal in an SQ setup.

but of course, no 'model' can accurately predict what may in fact sound great or terrible in the car.

I did a wrx a while ago that used 2 HCCA 12D's the guy who owned the car was a bit of an sq head and he loved them, we were running an XTR-800 amp to each one 1600rms to the subs alone maybe that explains why when you turned up the remote gain up they damn near ripped your head off.....

this was in a WRX no? Looked ace!

The XTR's arent really an SQ based sub, but given the right enclosure (large sealed) they can sound very linear and warm. The XTRPROS enjoy small boxes, where as the HCCA's play very nicely in small sealed or very large ported enclosures. Installed correctly they can produce some very clean subbass.

Thanks Walkinshaw!

It turned out pretty well....but man it took ages to do....and i tell ya that car needed the bigger turbo and cooler etc...cause that subbox weighed heaps....where did you see it?

I had 3 of the older carbon fibre Orion NT 10s, they sounded great but would also snap your head off at certain frequencies...they managed to stuff up my friend's jaw, haha. They are certainly called Ntense for a reason. I have 3 of the later NT series II 12s now and they absolutely crank low bass in small sealed boxes, damn accurate too. But you would want some pretty decent midbass (or a small cabin) to keep up with them.

Depending on how much space you have available, you could consider the JBL GTI series. There's nothing that really compares to them on any level but they need huge ported boxes.... we're talking about 4.5cu-ft per 15" sub with 7cu-ft being ideal but you will never hear a sub play so low while still being tighter than a lot of 8s. Have to be experienced to be appreciated.

We saw pics on CAA when the guy sold his Orion gear in the FS section.
