Heya

I can pick up a set of DSD-216 6 1/2" splits for only $320.00 (they retail at around $450.00 i think). Whats the sound quality like? do they compare to the likes of say an Alpine Type R split...
The more detail u guys can give me on how they sound inside a car and what u think of them the better...

I will be feeding them up to 120wrms so they'll b getting plenty of power.

yo pay $320 for it...yo get rip off man...i got mine onli for $290...let me tell yo...it sound great...luv the midbass, but lack in tweeter area...thats why i use a silk dome tweeters..LPG...but compare to alpine type R...i should say...its good value..

it doesn't appear to be much of an upgrade for you, IMO. they will undoubtedly sound different, so maybe the mbq's possess a tonal quality the alpine's lack and you're after. for example, the metal dome tweets may offer a brighter sound that you prefer.

otherwise, what happened to the SPX series alpine splits you were interested in? is it not worth saving harder for something you know you like?

just don't want to see you waste money on something that needs upgrading again sooner rather than later.

LOL yeah well the Alpines i still have, i am putting them in the back to be rear fill, they just wern't bright enough for my liking but do sound lovely as rear fill.

I'm in the process of re-designing alot of things and fixing up alot of the 'first install' errors, whichwill include a 3way front stage.
The MB's are just sumthing to tide me over.
Installed them today and they do sound excellent, very similar to the alpines, infact i can hardly pick the difference just the detail seems higher

i don't thinks it's either fair nor intelligent to suggest people are being ripped off. if you purchase anything for over the RRP, then i would consider that a rip off. but anything below, and you're getting a good deal regardless.

instead of suggesting you got a good price, i could also tell you you got bad speakers. but that's hardly fair either, only that i think i have better speakers than you. no point to it really is there.

numb: nice one. they are very good from all accounts, and i think since places like jb hifi have been offering them, they've sold them like hot cakes.

good point shiny I found that as i put it on agc also they had to pay a commission to agc so basically they didnt make too much money at all out of it. and also, im willing to pay for service.

THey do sound very nice, I would recommend them to anybody as a great alternative to most splits under the $600.00 mark as they're going for quite a good price atm

Tuned my amps today and i'm in a bit of a pickle.... my T420 (rated at 120wrms x 2) is on probably 1/3 gain and whenever i crank it to above 30 on my hu (it goes up to 35 and does not clip at 35) my speakers start emitting like a crackling noise with some notes....

should these speakers have such low power handling or is it the way i have them setup? I'm estimating they're geting about 60wrms each with theway the gains are set

it's probably your amp clipping, or it could be.

the position of the gain know is not a good indicator of how much power your amp's pumping out. for it will depend on how powerful the input signal is. the signal is probably sufficiently strong to cause the amp to clip.

if you're sure it's the speaker's being overexcurted, then maybe the HP filter is set too low, and the added bass is causing them to prematurely distort.

Thanks for the help, i dont think its the amp clipping, v12 amps in my opinion take alot of thrashing to make them clip and it really does seem very premature for the amp to be clipping, considering i had the same amp going at full hog without clipping :/

if an amps rated at putting out 120wrms thats 120wrms without clipping isnt it?
cus its not putting out anywhere near 120wrms or it'd surely blow the mbq's

In short yes, but again it can depend on the quality of the amp, THD, wiring, grounding, bridging etc. If wired with adequate gauge cable and ground that V12 should have no problems driving splits. If you start bridging amps that weren't designed to be bridged and you are driving ridiculous loads (mostly with subs) then you will certainly experience clipping.

Just my 2c...

maybe the mbq's are not as efficient as your alpine splits? so the amp may be pushed into clipping without the splits going as loud pre-clipping.

regardless, something's being pushed too hard.

is this noise only at high levels?
i notice i get that 2 sometimes with the spx's i got at various levels but found out that it was the cd-r try a original cd and see if it still happens.
let me know how you go?
