Exactly as it say's. I am after an SQ box for a kenwood 1225db sub. I know this sub isnt exactly the best sub for SQ, but i aint gonna enter competitions with it. All i am after is a good sounding stereo. I want the sub to be clear, and punchy... but i dont want it to be to punchy, i still want some nice deep bass.....

i can tell you now that a 1cft with a 3" port sounds crape, it sounds worse if you invert the sub....

the specs i have are:
*Fs 24Hz
*Qts 0.35
*Vas 3.986cuft
based on these, you should get good results from:
*sealed 1.0cuft
*ported 2.5cuft (net volume excl port displacement) tuned to 27Hz using a 4x15.5" single round port
if you can afford the space, ported would be worth a try. otherwise sealed would be pretty good.

thanks shiny_car
you just helped 2 people out at once.
edit: question:
ok, i can have my box a max of 12" deep
so.. if i say put a 90degree bend in the port to extend it to the 15.5" would it have a large effect on the sound quality?

no probs at all, it's a common solution to the problem.
the overall length should be measured down the centre of the port. you can do this easily if you lay the port on a flat surface like a table and draw a line along the centre of it on the outside surface. then measure that.
of course this port length only suits the box internal volume i mentioned: 2.5cuft, if you want it 'tuned' to 27Hz. you can't simply add a 4x15.5" port to a different sized box and expect the same results. a bigger or smaller box would require a different length port.

The box that i currently have in my car is a sealed 1.5 cubic feet.
Would that sound any decent if i wanted to port it? I cant really afford as much space as 2.5 without major changes to my whole layout.
If i did port it, what size port would i need to have??

the small box will require a very long port for decent SQ...like 3ft (for 4" diameter port)!
a narrower port will be shorter (more like 20") but the increased air velocity may lead to audible turbulence (port chuffing). a slot port would be an option, but i'm not experienced enough to suggest what dimensions.
you're probably better off sticking with sealed. try experimenting with a smaller internal volume too; you can just add some (telephone) books inside the box to reduce the volume for testing purposes. the bigger box will provide a little better low-end response at the expense of 'punch' (upper subbass frequencies).
