Full Version: sql on a budget
Mobile Electronics Australia > Mobile Electronics Discussion > Sound Quality Discussion
I posted something similar to this in general, but I'm not getting much of a response so I thought i might do better in here.
Right I'm in the market for 2 12's, have 800watts RMS to give the 2 of them, but the amp is only 4ohm stable. Max enclosure space is about 50lt per sub(trying to regain some boot space, I can currently fit my school bag in there and thats about it ), and budget is around $300-350 per sub.
Could you please list your recommendations, and if possible, let me know roughly what the enclosure sizes will be, because this is pretty much one of the most important factors.
The box will also most likely be ported as I still want loud, but if 50lt per sub isn't big enough for it to sound good, and play quite low, then I will go for sealed.
I'm also planning on fitting some 8" mid-bass drivers in the front doors, if that information is usefull to you.

Also on another note - Do people have any oppinions of the PG tantrum 12" subs that are for sale on webaudiodirect? http://www.webaudiodirect.com/store/prod139.htm

Hey man, what car do u have?

I am thinking it might be better to use the 100L and put in a single sub and that would give u a budget of about $700-$800... which means some real nice stuff
DrEvil
If you go for the single sub, check out this thread as it goes through the same sort of stuff...

Adire 12inch Brahma in 100litres. That would definitely be the best option ever, it will go deeper and put out massive volume at the real deep stuff. U can then use the 8's to do all midbass.

Go the brahma that sub will absolutely cain and will move like 2.5inchs with the 800wrms you give it.

100litres and ported and tuned to like 23hz will make the sub move heaps with the deep stuff, so 800wrms will be right
Where the hell can I see one of these subs??? Most importantly, whats one worth?

DrE - The car is a 89 Telstar sedan.

The Australian dealer of Adire Audio is -

http://www.acousticconcepts.com.au/

But I am unsure of the price.. But they aren't exactly cheap..

Btw, a single 12" brahma won't need anywhere near 100L when used in a car..
This sub looks like it would really pound...but 1600watts RMS. Doesn't look like my amp would do it justice at 800watts. Should I expect one of these to play loud?

Damon and Car Stereo Australia did an article on this a few years ago: They used a Corolla hatch, an MTX 15, an amp and bits and pieces, the whole set up costed $3000 not including the car and rewarded them with 150db.

Rich.
ouch
$780 for the 10"
$850 for the 12"
$995 for the 15"
plus 10% gst on all prices.
DrEvil
are they RRP or street?

Bobic,

Having read your post I would humbly suggest that two Image Dynamics ID12V.3 in either dual 2 or 4 ohm, depending on your amp configuration, would work very well and fit into much less than 50 litre enclosure per driver. They retail for $349 each and will be available very soon.

Thanks,
Steve Hutchison
DrE - thats rrp i guess, from the email i got.
Hutch - ooOoOo interested. When are these going to be released?
Hutch
Bobic, we anticipate arrival into Australia of first full shipment in around 4-6 weeks, possibly sooner.
Is there/will there be a retailer in victoria for these subs?

If your after SQL on the cheap then definitely go with a sub that is designed for a ported box. That is the key to SQL on the cheap. If you go sealed you need power, which is expensive. This way when the subs get loud in the ported box and will still sound heaps better than subs that suit sealed box's.

This in my opinion rules out the Alpine Type R and JL 12w3 woofers. They have to go sealed for any Sound quality.

The IDQ subs are ideal, they loves ported box's and will sound very very nice indeed and will go louder than the alpine n JL subs.

I reccon the Response Precision subs are very good woofers for SQL. Being designed for a ported box they sound so tight, even in an SPL box. I have two of the 15's in a 8cube ported box tuned low and this is surprisingly tight, and go SO LOUD!! that is more SPL than SQL though..

Two 12inch Precisions would be great, They are Dual 4ohm. So each coil can be wired in series so now each sub is 8ohm. Then wire both of tehm in parrallel to get a 40hm load. These subs are rated at 250wrms but take double their rated power very easily. So your 800wrms is perfect.

2cubic feet per sub ported tuned to 25hz would provide excellent Sound quality and go very loud. If you went with a bigger box say 3cube tuned to 25hz the subs will go a bit louder but the sound quality will reduce slightly. Woudl still be very tight.
