heya..
just wondering if anyone here has heard how the focal Audiom TLR tweeters sound? and how do they compare to the TN51 tweeters..
also the Audiom 6W midrange.. are these audiom ones better than the speakers in the 165W3? if they are, how would you set em all up? like what would be the best setup to have. ie TLR Tweeter, 6W midrange, and one of the other Midbass drivers? what kinda crossover would be sufficient... stuff like that..

ohhh... i've also been wondering how the focal subs (utopia range), perform.. do any other manufacturers use the multi magnet design? does that make much of a difference to SQ? and how do the focal subs rate in terms of SQ anyway?? and is there much audiable difference between subs that go down to 30hz and 25hz? my current sub (pioneer) supposedly goes down to 15hz.. i created a test tone cd, with samples at 5hz and i could still hear it, isnt that humanly impossible?

i'm just looking at ways of getting the best possible focal setup i can get... i'm happy with the SQ at the moment on my Polyglass speakers, but there's always room for improvement.. and i've noticed that not many ppl talk about focals in here in the SQ forum anyway.. i'm starting to feel like there are substantially better sounding speakers out there, which is almost hard to believe when i think bout how good i think my speakers sound.. guess i just havent heard the others tho..

n i dont really care how much a speaker costs in relation to the SQ u can get out of it... i know some speakers are too expensive, but if they sound flawless then i'm willing to pay..

thanx!!

Hehehe - yeah it's alright - the whole of CAA goes in cycles - seems to be a flavour of the month arrangement.

I run a full focal system in my car and am more than impressed at the SQ that it affords me. I made a concious decision to go with the single Polyglass DVC sub instead of 2 of the lesser brand ones - and it sounds fantastic.

I'm sorry that I can't comment on the Focal Audiom midrange or tweeters - the closest I have come to those is the display case at Freeway Car Audio - I really couldn't justify spending more on the tweeters than I was paying for a whole 2 way component system for the front.

The Focal Utopia Subs seem to hold their own as well. I have listened to a few cars with them and they're very nice.

Hope your quest for quality 'Focal' sound is as rewarding as mine was

I can't really comment on the Audiom range, but i run Utopia splits and i have to say the difference between the TN51 and TN45 tweeter is phenominal. After swapping my Kevlar's for Utopia's it took quite a while to adjust to the difference and better/clearer SQ. I've also heard a 13" Kevlar (i think) sub running of a U-Dimension amp in my mates car, and it sounds very nice and tight (ie.punchy).

Phil your comments and advice are always welcome on these forums but please try to refrain from always comparing everything with your products and trying to push your brands onto everyone..
There was no mention made of Morel and he wasn't asking about any other brand suggestions, only peoples thoughts on a perticular tweeter.

I for one get turned off very easily when someone tries to push a perticular product down my throat as i'm sure others are also.

Yes we all know that the products you sell are of high quality and when someone asks about your product by all means tell them all about it.

mazzoi you will find that many people have actualy discussed focal speakers on here and everyone has a different opinion on them...some say they are too bright others say they are very nice sounding...

Not having heard the perticular ones you are asking about i can't comment, but as i tell everyone else at the end of the day if it sounds good to you then that's all that realy matters...

just try to audition a set if you can, take along a cd you know very well and have a good listen.

Good luck with it

Mazzoi,

I run TN51's in my system with 165k2s for mids and have done for quite a while, they work really well, i have heard systems with the utopia range and also the Audiom TLRs. the utopia range was not a lot different but the TLR tweeters are an awesome machine. what lets them down is there size, very hard to put them somewhere without a lot of custom work....

I also use the utopia 13 inch sub, could not tell u if multiple magnets make a difference but at the same time a lot of people have commented on how smooth and accurate it is, as they say its is down to personal preference.

go for the tlr tweeters if you can justify the cost - I have listened to a set and they were pretty bloody good I must say . If you have trouble parting with that sort of cash for two tweeters go with the utopia set - you won't be disappointed either way . As for the subs - the maroochy boys had a 13 in the lexus is200 and it sounded great (punchy tight accurate detail-no sloppiness) only thing is from memory they need a HUGE box volume to work effectively ...

Anyone heard the focal 165 w3 system? worth spending the extra money over the poly-k or polyglass line? Also what sort of money are the tlr tweeters worth. cheers. Where in melbourne could i audition the focals when i visit from interstate?

Only you can really assess if it's 'worth' spending the money on the upgrade. I'm sure the W3s are a nice set of speakers - but I and many others are quite content with settling (if you call $600 fronts settling) with the Poly-K speakers.

What I would suggest though is upgrading to the TN51 tweeter - I did this when I got my speakers ahev haven't looked back since.

In Melbourne - I know that Freeway Car Audio (Malvern and Dandenong) have Focal display boards that you can demo the speakers in. Gary's car radio stock them - but I am unsure as to whether they have display boards. A few well placed phone calls might save a lot of running around in that respect.

Another place in Melbourne to audition focals is at a place called Stylin' Car Audio in Boronia. That's where i bought my Polyglasses from and they are very helpful in there, very layed back with lots of top quality speakers on boards.

p.s. no i dont work there or anything jus commenting on my experience.

The w3's are only $140 more then the poly-k's so considering that the tn51 comes standard with them, i guess the poly-k 3 way and tn51 as an extra would be more expensive. The w3 has lower frequency repsonse on paper so i'd lke to here them. I appreciate your recommending freeway, i am rushed for time on this trip so yes i will try and plan to minimise running around. Do you have freeway's address pls.

Jus b4 u ask:

has everyone heard that focal hav released a new polyglass line of splits? apparently they no longer use the tn45 tweeter and are now using a tn47 which has been developed in response to many pplz views that th old tweeter was too "bright". this new tweet is sposed to be more mellow and smooth. the new polyglass range is sposed to be a great improvement and the benchmark for how focal measures its other speakers, but i fink it mite also cost a bit more then the old range.
but hey... if u can afford the utopias.. id definitely go for the 165w3s =)
bobbyd
Well i bought the 165w3's. Now i need to do a kick panel install in an XF falcon. Anybody know of someone who has done a mid/tweeter kick panel for an XF? (yes i know the speakers are worth more than the car)

Good luck hearing mid-high end car audio stuff in Adelaide..

Tonkins - Sorry, we don't demo the Focal Utopia series..

Complete Audio - We don't demo the dynaudio splits, except on rare occasions when they install them on the sound boards in the TTG store, only to sell the display models after a few days.. *shrugs*

Cargear don't demo the Boston Pros either..

PS. If the distributors for any of these brands read this, could you kindly persuade these stores to have these speakers available for demos..
