Can anyone help me here? I’m looking at buying a 1978 mercedes-benz 280SEL, and need a few suggestions for a good SQ install with a bit of SPL thrown in

Well, i was looking at one of those too!!! Provided you made pods, etc, you could basically bolt speakers straight onto the front doors!! Huge cabin, lotsa sound deadening from factory (good for 1978!), nice car to drive and cruise.... spl, well, i dunno, but general bass, port it through the parcel shelf, the boot isn't *overly* deep from what i remember, however, it's long! Have fun with this one!

Is that the W126 series? I had an '86 420 SE which was more of an SPL than an SQ vehicle. I was running 4 12W6's off a 2000X. To get decent bass in the car I had to remove the first-aid box on the parcel shelf and then re-fabricate it. The only bad thing of that is you'll hear the fuel pump constantly. I also had to fibreglass inside the bootlid and add 50mm MDF along the inside of the tailgate to stop it from flexing.

Cheers, Brian.

Nah, it’s the W116, the LWB one with the same body as the 450.
I’m looking more for SQ than SPL, but that said, I want it to be fairly loud as well (loud and high quality)

Any suggestions on what sound deadening i should use?

for good value SDer, try a combo of G-spot serenity max self-adhesive stuff plus G-spot paint. the adhesive matting can be laid onto door panels and the boot, contoured to shape. the paint can get into nooks and crannies, and be applied to door-lock rods and stuff.

in a big car, you'll want lots of power from some high quality amps for good SQ. unfortunately that spells $$$, i'm sure you'll get good results from some nice quality components installed properly. same principles applies with any car in terms of installation. and focus on the front stage.

good luck

I’m not incredibly fussy price wise, and the benz is already a heavy carr, so a little more weight from sound deadening wont hurt too much. Any suggestions for high quality brands and what I could use? I’m asking ‘cos I haven’t really bothered with SQ before, but if I get this car, I’m goin to town on it
shiny_car
well, if not G-spot, available from Web Audio Direct (online store), then look at dynamat.

i've used their 'xtreme' SDer in my front doors, and it's excellent. the 'door kit' is ~$200 and will cover one surface of 2 doors (eg: outer skin). if you 'go to town', you could easily utilise 3 or 4 'kits' worth, or look into purchasing bulk sheets of it. maybe contact yanddy at CAA sponsor Audio Art & Technology. they may be able to supply it in bulk sheets rather than smaller packs, and they will ship nationwide.

good luck

anybody else got an opinion on SQ for this benz?
