I've read the SQ sub for $500 topic but didn't wanna hi-jack so thought I'd post mine seperately.
Updated sig with my new gear (yet to be installed) but planning the sub purchase now.
My goal is primarily an SQ system but sometimes I feel like a bit of doof so it also has to be able to go resonably loud. I'm assuming I'll be running a 2ohm load to the amp so should get 650W from the Lrx or if I decide on a power hungrey sub I could run it at 1ohm to get the 900W but this may be overkill for an SQ system. Keep in mine however I have a massive cablin space (VR Caprice) and an LPG tank between me and my sub. Price wise I am prepared to spend enough to match the quality of my other components but was hoping to stick to 700ish at most.
The IDQ sub is my #1 option at present by the sounds of things as it seems to have a great reputation and < $500! which is a bonus . But I know there have been distributor problems so how exactly do I get my hands on one of these in melbourne? any place where I can demo these subs?
The PG Titanium is another option I would like to demo so once again any Melbourne stores would be good.
I may be tempted by one of the Xtant hex subs aswell but once again would need to demo, so anyone know of places in Melbourne?
Oh and street prices on each sub would be nice if paying cash
Cheers!

i think running the amp at 2ohm with a single 12" 2ohm sub would be ideal. it'll produce sufficient subbass for your car without probs for SQ.
running 2 subs would mean added expense and/or lesser quality subs, plus more space required for a box.
the xtant DVC X1244 would be worth considering, although i'm unsure where you can audition them. places like hifi supermarket stock them, but they're not a great place to sample subs. streetprice is probably around $600. with a 500WRMS power handling ability, it'd be very well matched to the audison.
then there's the kicker S12L7 square. another great sub well-suited to SQ. streetprice should be very similar to the xtant.
i haven't heard a PG Ti sub before, but no doubt would be great. for image dynamic subs, give GL Pro Sound (essendon) a call. they used to have them, and if no longer, may be able to direct you to a place that does. otherwise contact CAA Member 'Hutch', who i believe is picking up distribution of ID stuff.
good luck

Get a Dual 2ohm sub and run your amp at 1ohm. heaps better with 900wrm on tap, gives far more headroom.
The IDQ sub lookings pretty nice indeed. though its rated at 350wrms it should take 600wrms for short bursts so u wouldn't want your amp going into clipping, so runnign at 1ohm will be far safer.

kinda. there maybe not much point if you never utilise the power, even for transients. i suppose it depends what the sub's rated to (which would reflect how much power it could handle as peak power). 1ohm will also demand more current flow (and less voltage output for the same overall power), which may lead to more heat production and inefficiency.
dunno if they're valid points, but something to think about.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
Didn't realise Hi-Fi Supermarket stocked Xtant gear cause I got a mate who works down there that can give me some good prices so that's sounding like a good option so far.
I'm kinda with shiny on the audison at 2ohm should provide enough juice for what is primarily SQ functions. Another consideration is boxes tho, I'd prefer a sub that suits a sealed enclosure for ease of building purposes while size isn't of much as an issue it'd obviously be nice to keep as much boot as possible.
Sooo.. what kinda enclosures am I looking at for the Xtant, IDQ or maybe the Kicker L7?
Cheers

the xtant and IDQ suit small sealed boxes, no probs. something like 1.2cuft would be ideal.
they also work fine ported.
not sure about the L7. probably a similarly sized sealed box too, say 1.2~1.5. there's plenty of discussion about them, so maybe worth doing a 'search'. mind you, ensure any box suggestions suits the '2002' model (which is best in sealed boxes) rather than the '2001'.

Shiny is on the money with sealed box sizes.
An L7 will generally want a bit more box than the others, in the 42 to 50 litre range for SQ sealed. The current model is better suited to sealed enclosures than the 2001, the dual 2 of which ports very well when tuned low.
Try and get a listen to some things before you decide. For instance, L7s have a unique sinewy weight about them that many people find very appealing. It is "to taste" tho'....
