People... I need some help picking my subs. My reason for considering two 8inch subs is for installation reasons. I have 200WRMS available @ 2ohms for the sub and was considering either a single Boston Acoustic 2ohm 10inch Generator or dual 4ohm 8inch Rockford Fosgate Punch Z's. (I'm open to other suitable sub suggestions of up to $350). My main goal is SQ with smoothly intergrated sub-bass and I want to know what differences there would be between these 2 setups.

10 inch.

Short... yet to the point. I have been thinking of new install designs and I should be able to fit a 10inch with no problems. When designing a box does it matter how much space there is between the subs magnet and the rear of the box? It will be in a sealed enclosure but to make best use of the space the box will probably be shallow but wide.

The depth should be fine.

Cant you fit a ported box in there?
Maz
10inch.

The boston would be a pretty good choice, I would wait and see if Image Dynamics has the IDQ available as a 10inch in australia, that would be very sweet.

A ported box would be too wide for my planned install, 19.4inches for the sealed or 31.4inches for the ported.

I might ask about Image Dynamics subs though as my local shop (PDs) will be selling them too.

so what will your front stage comprise? you list boston splits "eventually". and are they 4" splits?

if you have small front splits, then their midbass will be lacking unfortunately. so to cover the midbass bandwidth (ie: 80~200Hz range) you would either rely on the rears, fit some woofers up front (for a 3-way front stage), or possible rely on the subs. if you can't fit sizable woofers up front (ie: 6~8"), then you are best to rely on the rears for midbass, which you list as being 6".

therefore, you are probably best to go with a 10" sub, which would make an ideal 'step up' from the 6" woofers in the rear.

the boston sub would be pretty good, although i've had no personaly experience with them. other options would include:

*alpine type-S DVC SWS-1040D RRP$259
*alpine type-R DVC SWR-1040D RRP$349
*JL audio 12W3v2-D4 DVC RRP$459
*phoenix gold tantrum series T10D DVC $178 from Web Audio Direct

hope this helps.

A 10 if you can fit it, will go lower all things being equal which is the idea of a sub....

Shiny's comments regarding the mix of fronts and sub(s) are worth considering, since I don't know that.....

With respect to depth, most manufacturers will advise what is the mimimum rear clearance for venting the pole piece (usually an inch or so).

Put a 10" Phoenix Gold Titanium from the online store on that list too...
