hey,
i know PG is a good SQ brand, but just wnated to know where the tantrum range of amps stands in terms of SQ compared to say Alpine V12s, audison LRX's etc..ie. are they better than v12's and as good as lrx's?
another thing is what would be better to run a sub, a M500 or a Tantrum 500.2 bridged? is the tantrum as 'beefy' as the monoblock for running subs?
thanks

The PG tantrum amps are a very gutsy amp i had a T350.2 running 2 DVC tantrum subs bridged onto the amp and they were so loud it wasnt funny. They are more a power amp then an SQ amp more than anything but sum off the other guys mite think different but if you have used them before they should know what i meen.

I agree awesome amplifiers however i disagree that they are more loudness orientated....having owned ZX, XS and Tantrum anps over the years I have been very happy with the SQ of their equipment...it is easily a match for Orion, Soundstream, Audison etc....If your looking at a monoblock Phoenix also make the QX900.1 which does about 900rms for about $1000 and also the T 1200.1 Tantrum which does about 1200 rms for about $1500....you could negotiate a better street price though..

the tantrum series, despite being PG's 'entry level' range, are very, very good. i haven't used them, but their reputation, build quality, and specs suggest they're at least as good as alpine V12's; at least that's how i view them.
again, based only on reputation, i see the audison LRx range to be less 'in ya face' and slightly warmer. they're probably good examples of US vs euro vs jap: grunty vs super clean vs warm, but all possessing great clarity and SQ.
bear in mind the alpine monobloc is best used driving 2ohm loads, whereas the bridged PG tantrum is best driving 4ohm mono loads (although may cope at 2ohm mono).
if it's subs you're wishing to drive, then i still suggest going with a monobloc (whichever brand), presuming you have the appropriate load/impedence to run.

The tantrum amps (monoblocs) are actually 1ohm stable although dont produce any more power at 1ohm over 2ohm and at 2ohm only produce 30% more power than at 4ohm...
I would have trouble looking past the QX Series though, they are a great price at the moment and from early inspections of my amplifiers seem very similar to the Tantrum amps (the insides almost identical when comparing power supply size etc), only difference being is the QX is D Class (more efficient) yet the Tantrums have a larger heatsink...

Shiny shiny shiny... maybe you should stick to Audison and Alpine?
Tantrum are not the entry level series, that is the QX, Tantrum are the middle range...
Anyways, I own a XS2500, which is the previous model to the Tantrum 500.2 and it's the best amp I've ever owned! Powerful and clean... excellent crossovers, and I believe the 500.2 has 18/db octave variable? excellent
As for which would run subs better, I think the Alpine MRD500 would be better as its a monoblock, and would put out similar power figures to the PG...

that said do you (bodyjar) think theirs anything *wrong* with the QX range?

Hell no, the QX range is one of the best entry level lineups I've seen!

Sorry to hijack this thread for a second, but is there a PG dealer in melbourne where i could go to look at the amps / get a price list or is there an online pricelist?

I love my new XS2500, as bodyjar said a great amp and not too big either fits under the front seat no worries and it is also 2ohm mono (1ohm Stereo) stable..! Me thinks the tantrum line is exactly the same bar heatsink and a few internal updates. It runs my PG tantrum 12" very nicely at a 4ohm load.... all i have to do is get some resistors to put into the module to change to the crossover from 100hz to 80hz, have u dont this before richie?

Eh? My crossover is fixed 24db/oct at 85hz....

The later model XS series from PG had a plug in resistor module to allow different crossover frequencies. There should be a diagram and formula in the owners manual to calculate the value of the resistors for the desired crossover point.

Yer mine has got a rubber plug on teh bottom which has a plug in resistor network..... in the manual it says it is fixed orignaly set at 100hz... there was no formula in the manual but i d/l an older one which has the formula... have to go to jaycar and get some resistors..
