Sorry Guys, realised after my post in claf's SQ sub topic that it was a bit of a hi-jack so I thought I'd repost it here.
Had almost decided on a Xtant hex sub, as they sounded pretty sweet after a little auditioning.
But with the wrap up on these brahma's... a few hundred more won't kill me Any ideas where I can audition/purchase in melbourne? Really wanna hear one of these beasts rumble... Is $935 as mentioned before a street price?
Lastly it'll be running off a Lrx 1.400, if they like power, I could get a dual 2 to feed it 900W. I have one of the cooling modules for the Lrx, and most likely be in a fan cooled amp rank anyway. So heat shouldn't be too much of a problem I hope... if anyone else running the same amp at 1ohm it'd be good to hear their experience. What kinda size enclosure for optimal performance? Would prefer a sealed for ease of building.
Thanks guys!

As per my post in the other thread, 35 litres sealed will work a treat with better low end response than ANYTHING else in that size enclosure.
I think $935 is a "go" price or pretty close. Compared to a W7 it is cheap, if not quite so pretty
Phil at RM Audio should advise suitability of the LRx @ 1 ohm. They do provide an "easier" load to drive than many woofers would at 1 ohm (very smooth impedance curve) even if it means they would likely be a bit peaky at system resonance. It would sound fine tho'.
For a bit of a *cough* "challenge" check out Mr_Bob's 26 Hz ported installation. Mind-bending bottom end for a single 12. And tight and clean as you could ever imagine in a ported enclosure.

Personally I'd go ported if you have the room. A ported box gives you the ability to match the woofer's response to the vehicle's acoustics in a way just not possible with a sealed box.
The other big advantage is the efficiency. A ported port will produce the same output as a sealed box with a QUARTER of the power. Think about this benefit to SQ, less distortion, less heat, less excursion = less cone break up etc etc
Have a talk with Marc next week, I'm very interested to see how he likes the 9512 I sent him.

supported by a sufficient front end, a 12" brahma has more than enough bass, and plenty of low end for any SQ application,
IMO it is capable of figures (on the new meter) up to 140db (on it's own) maybe as high as 145 with the right tune, power and car etc.
i've hit 137 on the new meter, but i'm yet to send full power to it.
i can't see an application where a brahma isn't suitable, unless budget is a major concern
it certainly suits me to a T

Thanks for the replies guys.
Shame your in Sydney Mr_Bob. I'd love to hear your setup. Can't make my mind up about the sub, hard to justify so much on a sub I havn't heard.. but i know it will be good . ~$900 on a sub is pushing the budget a bit however. But I think you're right in that it'll be perfectly suited for a good mix of SQ and some phat bass when wanted depending on the mood.
Never built a ported enclosure, but i'm more than willing to give it a go if its well suited. It's going into a VR statesman with a gas tank in the boot so we'll be looking quite a large cabin space if that has any effect on the enclosure design.
What sorta size are we talking for a ported box? tuned to 26hz good way to go? what sorta port length/diameter will be needed?
Thanks guys

mine's about 75L, witha 100X150mm port, which is 1100-1200mm long, don't have exact measurements with me.
i'd rather have one brahma than 2 $450 drivers.
besides if i want more bass later, i can always add another brahma....
(not that i have any boot space left for a bigger subbox)

They really don't need that much actual enclosure volume as such to port them.
I think Mr_Bob's is actually 65 litres nett of driver and port but the port occupies ~ 25 litres with a large throat and such a low tune in that size enclosure , so the total box size is a fair size.
You do need a large port with something like 27mm Xmax on tap and big power to push it. Moves a LOT of air at low frequencies.
But the low-down push is simply awesome for a single 12, and so well controlled at extreme excursions.

that's 27mm EACH WAY, linear. (without distorting)
i hit 130db with just over 500WRMS @ 26Hz on the old meters, to give you an idea of what sort of power you'll need.
(that was in a ported enclosure)

With a ported box, would you recommend running a 2ohm load to the audison for 660W (assuming u can get dual 2 of dual 4) because it's more effcient and obviously less heat issues with the amp? or would the sub still love the additional juice?
Excuse the ignorance about ported boxes as ive never made one but I'm assuming that was a slot port design.. Do you just make the port out of mdf within the box? ie have the opening of appropriate dimensions on the sub face of the box and snake it around internally using mdf for the desired tuning? Any pictures of the internals of such a box would be good... u don't have any of your's Mr_Bob do you?
Won't bug for specific box/tuning specifications until I decide on which sub I'll get but I must admit the Brahma is looking like a mighty fine option.

only comes in dual 2,
the LRx will be fine.
900WRMS will be plenty to get some good noise from the brahma.
yes the ports are made out of MDF inside the box.
i have pics, somewhere... not sure if they are on webspace, if they are i'll post em here, if not, i'll email them to ya.
my box is a bit of a monster, with MDF thicknesses between 25 and 43mm... (some sides thicker than others)
i'd recommend 25 as a minimum.

both!
im very keen on buying one in the next month or so, i was actually contemplating buying stones 15" (when he sells it), but i would have preferred a 12". so im interested to see how people have them installed...

Mr_Bob your a gun
Thanks heaps for that, the constuction is as I imagined it to be, doesn't look anything too tough over a sealed box, just a few pieces on the inside I might nah you'll for exact specifications sometime soon
While I'm not looking at purchasing the sub for around a month or so, I know the temptation of a Brahma will dig away at me and I'll end up getting one.... hehe
Anyone know the best way to get my hands on one in melbourne? Have no idea if any stores stock them or if ill be looking at some kind of direct from distributor purchase.
Cheers
