Full Version: Impressed By Stock System...

Well today i got the chance to listen to the stock system in my boss's Volvo S80... she was talking about how nice it is for several weeks, and today she got to prove her point...

I was DAMN impressed at how clear it was, there was a centre speaker too (probably slightly too loud) but it had a nice high sound stage but the only other thing i could fault was a lack of mid bass, and the sub (whatever it was) was dragging the stage back slightly...

But anyways, this is by FAR the best stock system i have heard so far...

Let's hope that we see other manufacturers taking this route!

Yeah it's good to see some car makers understanding the importance of car audio, however I hope that they get out of this itergrating the headunit as part of the dash idea, as this will put an end to alot of the car audio industry and not allow for the amount of customisation that we have today. Unless you drive a new BM, Ford etc

most of the stock system usualy got lots of midbass n sound very warm (from my exp listen to S500,735 & ML55 AMG), but lack of clarity, n more rear staging than front

DrEvil - The S80 has a Dolby Prologic II system, one of only two factory cars in the world I think, hence the centre channel, and im told it sounds quite good for a stocker - but obviously I'm HOPING mine would kill it in sound quality given my components and custom setup - but I dunno, i've never heard it, I can only hope I don't get outdone by a stocker!

a friends parents purchased him this car for him when he was 17 (lucky bastard )

that was the first thing he mentioned

dont the new volvo convertables come with dynaudio speakers, I remember reading the Dyn Catalouge and seeing the car in it and a little blurb on the stock speaker setup. Are you around Hutch to shed some light on this,
cheers

Yep - from the Volvo Website in the section for the C70 Convertible:

The Volvo Premium Sound System is a high-class loudspeaker system that has been developed for the true music-lover, with very high demands when it comes to natural sound reproduction. It has been produced especially for the Volvo C70 Convertible in collaboration with the Danish loudspeaker manufacturer Dynaudio. Two subwoofers can also be fitted behind the rear seat backrest. This gives extra power to the bass register and can be disconnected by the rear seat passengers if they wish. The system consists of six or seven loudspeakers at the front and four or six at the rear.

LOUDSPEAKER LOCATIONS:

Doors: two 8-inch woofers and two 4-inch mid-range.

Instrument panel: two 1-inch tweeters and one 5-inch center (coaxial) if you choose the Dolby Surround Pro Logic.

Rear passenger space: two 6.5-inch woofers and two 1-inch tweeters plus two optional 9-inch subwoofers.

I noticed the Pro Logic emblems on the headunit it also had the option of switching "centre focus" or they call it something like that... on or off from a little button...

This system DEFINATELY had the clarity, just not the midbass i want...

u have to make up for being a volvo driver SOMEHOW dont u!?
just think, now volvo drivers will also be known for booming whilst causing accidents. lol

"officer, all i heard was "boom boom boom" and then this green volvo came out of nowhere and cut me off, and i swerved but hit a pole, and then all i could here was this "boom, boom boom" getting quieter"

the phantom volvo boomer
lol

As far as I can ascertain, the only Volvos that are available with the Dynaudio audio package are the C70 Convertible and Coupe, and the S80 sedan.
There may be other models in North America or Europe that offer the Dyn audio pack as an option but it is almost impossible to find out. If anyone really wants to know I can email the factory and find out. By all accounts the C/V70 sounds very good but I haven't been in to my local Volvo showroom for an Audition!

Which is the popup window for the Audio option:

With a powerful separate amplifier you can enjoy even better sound, since you can turn up the volume and listen to music and really hear the difference between the loud and soft sections with very little distortion.

The power output is 4x100W. The amplifiers are specially designed for the Volvo C70 Convertible

actually something ive always wondered - with premium factory systems that advertise they use BRAND X, like dynaudio or harmon kardon or bose - which actual models do they use? i would assume the lower end models (as the customer never sees them anyway, so why splurge), or a special OEM model made just for that contract.

my question is, in the example of the volvo's, which dynaudio speakers are used exactly? are you really getting what your told?

as for the 'centre focus' buttin you mention Dr Evil, that sounds like an OEM adaptation of the prologic function "centre width" which is fully adjustable, and not just on and off. i guess they simplified the controls as your average mum and pop wouldnt know where to start, or be bothered, setting up prologic properly

i knew there had to be a catch!

I must say that it is a good and a bad thing in that it will eventually and already is starting to put a lot of small specialist car audio stores in a spot of bother. There bread and butter days were installing CD Players in every Joe Bloggs car when they first came out. Now you never see a factory car without a CD player. That means stores are making there money from upgrades and subs and amps now......

What will they be left to sell if you can go out and buy a commonwhore with a a full setup already installed? Is that a good or a bad thing for the community and will it effect the retailers in a bad way with people no longer needing to upgrade to get a good sound out of there system? Will ignorance kill out passion with everyone in the world being able to say they have a great SQ Car?

I for one don't like it at all. They should be made to upgrade there system themselves when they want sub bass and good front stage audio in there Volvo. Otherwise we get a bunch of ignorant consumers on the scene bassing it up at lights and enthusiasts such as ourselves will cop the wrap over the knuckles through harsher penalties and confiscating stereo's.

I don't care if Dynaudio makes the gear. Will the driver ever appreciate the art of creating a central and high sound stage? Will they know the feeling of joy when your new 8" Drivers burp out there first audition of "Private Invetigations" after countless hours of glassing, deadening and painful EQ adjustments?

Or will technology just make all our efforts look like cheap buggers that didn't want to buy the new technology? IE - A speaker on your dash and a button that makes a center stage. WHERE IS THE BLOODY PASSION IN THAT!

Is this the death of SQ being a challenge?

Rex.

there will always be the individualists like ourselves who want to be different.
it's kinda like saying "what will happen to the performance car industry when ppl can go and buy a 300+kw car with 500+Nm of torque straight off the showroom floor"
those who want to be unique, will be.
and i doubt it will ever get to the point where all price ranges of cars have fully done stereos.
because the cost and increase in weight will just be too high.

Very true, Sathid... Wogs like myself could never justify getting a ferrari for 150,000 plus, when we can build up a car pre-1990 and do it up to go faster and feel better than one! To our own taste of course. But hey, owning a ferrari is a good thing, not knocking them, but I'm just beeing humble.
Sorry for that guys.. just adding my 2 cents!

Wogs like you? Go the ethnicity plug. I am not too sure what that has to do with the topic.

Anyway I am saying that people become too blarsay about good stereo's when they start rolling out of the factory with Dyn's and the point is that the enthusiasts will have to start putting up with more people bassing at lights and then the finger being pointed at us.
DrEvil
hahaha i can definately see where u are coming from Slappin Rex.

But what these people will NOT have is fully customised stereo's that are tuned exactly to their taste.

Big brands must cater for everybody...

We are UNIQUE. Don't worry because NO Commodore will come out with a big boot install with fully sik neons and a strobe!
