As stated in the topic,

best tweeter out of the above bunch?

max cost of $400 per pair.

Also locations to buy the tweeter in Victoria - Melbourne?

(Focal and Boston and vifa seem to be pritty easy to get - a lot of stores sell them, where can i buy Dynaudio and Morel car audio gear from in Victoria?)
claf_43
DLS ultimate Pro or Ultimate Reference, excellent tweeters
Sonic Nirvana
There's a fair range of "styles of presentation" in that list.

Old line, but it will be to taste. Sizzle or smooth?
I like my Morels, but there would be a good case to a different taste to any of the others, Dyn, Boston, Focal etc
adrianf
going in a 2 way 3 way setup?

what are the tweeters going to be matched with?

i think the most important factor is what is going to blend the best with your other components.
craigt
most autobarn stores carry hertz so the distributer would have given a price list to them ie. rm audio id go for the morel supremo tweets for $999 rrp.
incar just did a cover on them. read it and decide
magus
i like the dynaudio i have them there real smooth
but best to listen to them yourself try to find somwhere you can have a listen might be hard and a lot of leg work but well worth it

Vifa XT25.

Very large, but at $218 a pair, you are laughing!!!

I would recomend

Oz Audio Oz-25 1" Silk Cotton tweeters
very nice smooth sound american built
rrp of $270 i have been told
[white lie]
i actually like the vifa tweets better than the standard dyn tweets, much more smoother IMO and go very well with dyn drivers too

Depending on how you plan to integrate the tweeters into your system, I would seriously consider the following:

"17 May 2003: A limited number of Dynaudio D-260 Esotec tweeters are available at AUD$245- each including GST (Shipping extra)." (Soundlabs Group)

Also, if you have a penchant for the Vifa sound, I'd recommend having a look into the Scan/Speak range.

But, if you could let us know a bit more about your system and objectives, you'll probably get some more specific advice ... good luck!

Hey guys,

thanks for the replies.

Sorry i didnt post much info, i setup the question mid week one morning b4 work and then have been buisy as since then so i have only just checked the topic again now.

Now the system is still very much under way and i am still very much deciding things as i go.

Currently im thinking about runing the front stage fully active, and the front stage most definatly being a 2 way setup. I have got some MOREL HCW6.5 drivers which will be mounted in the door's.

Thay will be going in the factory locations (factory was 5x7") so ill be making up a baffle to mount them on, doors will be 'sealed' with SD. I am thinking about mounting the tweet's right beside the mid. in the baffle.

This is really just something ill try and see how it sounds, if this doesnt sound right they will be mounted in the kicks.

Now i would LOVE some of the supremo's etc. but the problem is SIZE. Although there is nothing really hard about making them fit, i just will not make these sort of mod's to my gf's brand new car

I havent heard many car audio speakers over the past 3 or so years, and a lot seems to have changes in terms of a lot of new brands appearing etc... a lot more in the marketplace, and given the difficualties in auditioning 'upper market' productes these days i havent been able to hear any of the above, or find a retailer with any of the above in stock to evan see!

Going back about 4-5 years with the Ti Boston Pro Series tweeters, i used to love them, very bright sound which was something thing a lot of people didnt like about them but not me.

My music taste - if you can call it that is very broad, from Aerosmith to Jethro Tull, Dave Matthews Band to 2pac, NOFX to India Arie...

I am after a tweeter that can perform with a broad range of music.

Once again, if anyone knows where i can hear the Morel or Dynaudio gear that would be great, the same goes for every other brand listed too.

Thanks
Travis

What you'll find is that certain tweeters will match certain mids.... The "sound" that the tweeter produces can vary HUGELY from brand-brand, chosing the wrong tweeter will give a very obvious transisition from tweeter to mid... this is not what you want... The only way to truely prove what you need will be to actually try it. If you have morel mids, go morel tweeters.... same brand are usually "similar" characteristics... however, different brands are bloody hard to match!

ubugger is on the right track. Basically by mixing and matching components can yield a far better result than going with the same brand.

I have found this to be the case with Vifa and Peerless. By matching the Vifa XT25 with the Vifa mid (can't recall the exact m#) they were very good, but when I heard them with the Peerless HDS6.5s, the result was great, day and night compared with the all-Vifa.

Both have the same price on www.advanceae.com.au also. For the amount of money people spend on ready made components, you could have the drivers for $440, and a custom crossover (eg US Amps) for $200. For this side of $700 there isn't a better 2-way setup IMO.

that would make a very nice 2 way setup A tried and test pair the xt25 and peerless. Also a nice cross over .

I plan to grab a few xt25s for a home setup. 4 of them I think. 10 6.5" kevlar jaycar mids, and 4 15" X-ones just need to find some nice mid power Home amps

Given your restrictions in terms of physical size, I wouldn't venture too far away from products designed specifically for car audio, since home tweeters generally have quite large faceplates (not to mention a lack of sturdy grilles).

Having said that, and taking into account what you've told us, a couple of options include:

Dynaudio MD100 28mm soft dome tweeter
- RRP AUD380/pr
- the models higher up in the Dynaudio range get pretty chunky (comparable to, say, Morel Supremos)
- IMO the MD100s are hard to fault anyway, so they're well worth an audition, and may synergise well with the Morel midwoofers since the two companies do employ similar technologies and ascribe to similar philosophies

Boston Acoustics Neo 5T Pro Series 1" aluminium dome tweeter
- RRP ~AUD400/pr (including crossovers)
- the crossovers that are included in the package allow you to select from "normal" mode (high pass at 3500Hz) or "ambient" mode (high pass at 8000Hz) ... these will be superfluous if you are running an active front stage, but they might be useful for protecting the tweeters

Focal TN51 titanium inverted dome tweeter
- RRP?
- by most accounts, these are well worth the premium over the TN45 tweeters
- as with the Dynaudio range, the higher model (namely the Audiom TLR, RRP AUD1531) is venerable but rather sizable

Vifa did make some car audio tweeters, but these will probably be hard to find. Vifa/Scanspeak produce the X-series speakers for Alpine, so these might be a possibility.

Having heard the above tweeters as part of complete systems, my pick would be the Dynaudios. That's not to say the others are inferior, but they all have different sonic signatures. I wouldn't go so far as to characterise soft domes as "smooth" and the metal domes as "bright" or "harsh", since there are examples of both that sound good and bad, so it boils down to personal taste. If someone can help direct you to some places in Melbourne where you can have an audition of the various brands, then that'd be the way to go. Don't forget to bring along some CDs with which you are familiar, but I tend to think that a good-sounding system should do justice to any well-recorded music.

Happy hunting!

For that price range, definately check out the Hertz HT-250. http://www.rmaudio.com.au/hertz/mille.htm
This is probably the second best tweeter I have ever heard (although I'm probably a bit biased ).
It's got a wonderfully smooth top end, and it also has a nicely detailed upper midrange (~3kHz).
Should be well within your $400 budget, but finding one to listen to might be a problem because there isn't much Hertz Mille gear around on sound boards.

try the scanspeak revelator 99000.
