I was just wondering how different subs compare in there sq if they are put it to their optimal encosure.
What I mean is would say a Alpine type-s 12" in a good enclusure sound way better than say a Jacar Venom 12" in its perfect enclosure for the same type of music.
And also say a type-r versus a type-s and so on and so on.

Different subs behave differently for a number of reasons.
1 - Componet quality used in manufacture
2 - Quality of amp driving them.
3 - CArs resonant freq.
And much more.
Buying a sub because it is an Alpine or other well known brand is no guarantee of Sound Quality, just like buying a bottle of NO2 and bolting it to your can wont make the engine a race engine.
In SPL well that is another kettle of fish.

So how do you find out the quality of the componets used in the consruction?
Do you just try and stay with a good brand, or if it costs heaps it should be good quality. Or can cheap stuff (ie Jaycar) be good quality at a good price?
Can you recomend any brand names to short list and then do listening tests from?

it all comes down to install. if the sub is in a perfect box (also it has to be a half decent driver) not amny ppl would tell the difference.
in my gf's car i had a boston rally 10in in a ~1cf box, i had a few ppl listen to it and no oe beleved it was a $200 speaker. it just sounded fantastic!
but when the sub was in my car in a diferent box it just dident sound to good.
The new boston pro 10.5 we put in her car after does sound better but only just!

It is only natural for someone new to the scene to want to know all the shortcut you take to achieve the optimuk results for the minimal amount of dollars.
Fact is; it don't work that way.
Like buying a house, a hat or a hamburger, car audio will only get easier and less expensive to do well after you've educated yourself about the subject.
But then again that's half the pay off for eductaing yourself about it - right?

With your example, if you put the sub in its 'perfect' box, gave it the 'perfect' amount of power and kept all other things constant then you will be able tell the difference between an Alpine, Jaycar and something like a JL W7 or ID max. I don't think many pple (me included) will be able to tell the difference between an Alpine type R and S from hearing it alone.
