Full Version: When Did You Realise SQ Was For You?

I was sittin in a pre-exam revision lecture today, and as I was walkin in the car park, all I could hear was this doof doof doof coming up the road. This got me a thinking! When did you realise that SPL wasn't necessarily for you and you decided to make the pivotal movement towards and SQ based setup! I mean, sure, SPL is cheap, but when I can't even hear the words in something like 'Money for Nothing' in a mates car I started to question the point! I am just a beginner starting off with a humble system, which, in my next install, I hope to create into something special. I've learnt a lot about SQ in terms of tuning, manufacturers etc. and hope to put this in good use in the next few years.

I just wanted to know what your pivotal point was, and what people started off with on their way to their dream system!

For me it's all about the music. Sure S.P.L. guys have LOUD systems, but it's when you hear a song for the first time, and then your system takes over. You feel the guitar strings being plucked, the agression of the kick drum and vocals sharp and crisp. The song comes to life...your there!! You open your eyes, wipe the sweat from your forehead, and reliese that SQ is for you.

well im stuck on the sql bridge, but i leaned that way because my ears made me, i have somewhat naturally sensative ears and pretty good hearing and after a while the doof-doofing (as much fun as it was/is) became a bit of a no-no but still love spl too, and while sq is something you really have to 'listen' to instead of hear, i can see both sides...so yeh like i said im on the fence (thats a useful reply if i ever made one )

Ditto. For me, it's love of music.

Doof Doof is great at times, but driving home from a stressful day at work and listening to some great music relaxes me.

Well i love listening to music, so it was natural that i went SQ...SPL interests me but i wont be dabbling in it unless i have a spare SPL car lying around

Yeah - when I sat in a car and was bass pounded - but could still talk to the occupants because there was no high range notes.

Also - when you realise standard music has a lot more range out of what a subwoofer handles.

And when you experience a "tingle" because the stereo sounds just so good and you can hear all aspects of the recording.

That wins it for me - rather than having my ears bleed and vision rattled by 150dB.

Not to say I don't get excited by SPL - it's just as a daily driver proposition I'm much better suited to building an SQ car...

Two things really. The love of music is one but the main thing for me was listening, no that's not the right word... hearing some friends systems that have 500W going to crap subwoofers with the speakers powered by the head unit. I can't stand unbalanced systems.

sq is nice and it's wat u ultimately aim for.. to enjoy ur music... even with an spl setup u wanna tune it when daily driving to ahve the best sound quality that it can have IMO

when I got a set of audio gods 4" splits to replace the factory fronts in my 240 volvo.

I bought them cause they were cheap, but they were great I found out. They had impact and were able to integrate with the pair of pioneer 10's (each in a 45ltr box), it sounded great.

The music came from in front of me on top of the dash, and I could clearly hear the songs I played in it had life in the range beyond the subs reach.

Unlike my mates car who had a pair of 12's and a set of 4" speakers with the dual cones, his system was good for doof but everything sounded flat and dead above the range of the subs

I was at a mates party one time....i went to the car and got a couple of my cd's....put it in his bose home entertainment system and thought "that sounds so much better then in my car...!"

i have always enjoyed listening to my music rather than feeling and hearing it (that is good also dont get me wrong)and since that point i have tryed to make all my cd's sound as good as they do on his home stereo.....

Also hearing a couple of SQ cars at shows swayed me too....

well i saw the light when i got sick of listening thump thump thump in mate's cars that had pretty much no midrange - high range. I wanted my system to be something special (well in my eyes at least...and there's a helluva lot more $$$ to spend and work to do ) and when i first heard my dad's celine dion CD by accident on the home system (nothing special, just an "everyday" average system) i was hooked to actualy LISTENING to the music.....oh and nothing beats the fury of a nice kickdrum!

My introduction to sound quality was from early childhood. My father always spent a lot of money on entertainment systems. Whilst he was biased a lot towards bose and onkyo he did try out other brands (namely HK, Cervin-Vega). Anyways it was only about two years when I became truly passionate. I got a really old set of bose speakers and luxman audio set from my garage and hooked it up to my computer (for games, mp3, DVD). From just two speakers that were over ten years old they still sound absolutely amazing.

Music is an integral part of my life at home and in the car. My real enthusiasm for car audio is that I am starting to do things for myself and I am realising the rewards (while quite small in comparison to others) it is a large step for me. With home audio it almost feels like cheating because it is relatively easy.

just my story.

meh SQ.....

after being let loose at work with $200k+ worth of highend speakers and amps.... i never looked back.

now i demand to have the HK's... they are pure SQ.

obviously this just moved onto into my car

My dad has had good SQ home hifi systems since before I was born, about 30 years or so now I guess. Speakers using drivers by Kef and Celestion for example. When I first bought a car stereo, I got splits, just because I could afford them and was told they sounded better, but I didn't really know better. After a few years I got a new car and made sure my system was SQ based, as I have friends who are SPL based and I hate driving anywhere in their cars as all I hear is the sub, and I like to be able to hear the music and appreciate it.

when the pyshics stuff you should have understood in highschool suddenly makes sense when you have your car apart playing with it
OP
pretty much I've never been interested in SPL even before I knew what SPL and SQ meant. But I think it really started when I first visited these boards and was reading peoples experiences and the gear they had. Then imagining it all in my car
lotulu
hmmm, let me think...
oh i remember, it all started when

one day my friends jumped into my car i and cranked up the music showin off
me: check this, my systems full sick yeh???
friends: man ur systems sounds sounds like crap, hardly can hear it
me: (after few sec of embarassment) bro, this system fully tuned for SQ, what would all u bassfreaks know bout SQ
friends: (scratchin their heads) hmm, ok
so thats when i decided its better to have a SQ system

J/K
nah i love big bass, just i cant listen to it for too long, get big headache real easy

Um....If you want to talk serious SPL it aint cheap....It would cost just as much as an SQ setup....Anyway I would like to have both an SPL and SQ car in one, I wouldn't be able o choise between either
RTTZ
My start into car audio actually started cos of road noise!!! I couldn't hear my music cos the std system was crapy and road noise drowned most of the music.

My first 'system' was a pair of 6x9" in the rear shelf of my hatch back with the std casset player hooked up to my discman (this was like 12 years ago almost).

I never really wanted a SPL system - all I wanted was to listen to my music. I guess over the years I've just improved on the previous systems I've had. Bass is good - but for me it has to fit within the spectrum of the rest.

Final Battle 02

Was on the CAA stand all weekend and in the motel them dodgie melbourn guys beat the SPL out of me
harris_r31
to start with something different, all my mates wanted to go spl, so i thought id go sq, but now im in sq, i could never go back to spl *shudders at the thought of turning the sub level up*
FLiPSiDE
I heard T-bro's car

i'll never be a purist.. but i had a decent go at it with my current set up:)

I found myself going straight for SQ coz I came straight from home Hi-Fi. A nice setup at home left me with little doubt what I wanted in my car!
raziel
too many years ago to mention I started with 2 pioneer 10's and 2 12's (freeair) in the back of the crumpledore and some 6" coaxials up front and 7x10's on the rear shelf (I wonder why it had a slightly rearward soundstage )

look at my sig to see the other end of the spectrum

I went to a car audio show in Penrith, it was held in the white giant tent thing out the back of the Panthers club, over two days.

There I had a listen to a Ford Bronco. Full of Pioneer, and the system design, using all Pioneer gear, is similiar to what i'm building. This thing was fully active front and rear with 146 db of output. 146 is not a big number until you find out that were talkin bout 20hz to 20khz of SQ, at 146db. no tones or sweeps.

I pottered with various systems until recently making the decision to go the way the guy did who owned the Bronco.

It is to this day my favorite.

My aim is a live concert, loud and very clear, but also with the linearity to be low and clear.

Other honourable mentions who's car I heard after, or met are:

Andrew Green's Honda Civic.
Angelo Kanci's BMW 318.
Paul Graham- Alpine GAIT and Alpine demo cars
Graham Humphries- Power Sound (Miranda Sydney)

and also who ever owned a Falcon with the number plate "Volume" in 1992 (i think) that went to the first Car Audio Nationals show held in Sydney at Parramatta Park.

They cary the blame for my system...

For me i saw the light, not long after my friend got subs. Driving around with very little high range and what high range there was being disrupted by way too much bass.

But i still want a bassy system, but i hope it will still be very capable at producing a nice continuous spectrum with good staging and clarity.
T-Bro
for me it was simple - im a perfectionist, so a balanced and realistic SQ system is the only thing that satisfies my pedantic nature

SPL and boom cars are for slobs and the mediocre

I believe it's an evolution that everyone takes ... to a certain degree of course!

I know lots of people will not agree with me on this ... but then again they won't be at Audiophile's Corner.

I think it's the love of music, and this seems to be true for the majority of people who posted in this thread.

I still love doof doof, but it's SQL these days and there's a time and a place for everything. Say, Saturday night cruising will still be doof doof.

I think the defining moment for me is when I first heard music so good, it made my skin crawl. The sheer clarity and depth and beauty of the music is so aparent that even a big doof doof fan like me was touched.

The raw emotions that can be evoked by music is I think why and when I realised that SQ is for me.
Andu
I think I realised that SQ was for me around the same time I realised I was attracted to boys... wait I don't like either of those.
bassmekanik
as yall can tell by my name SPL is my game mainly because i seem to have good luck with SPL but i would like nothing more than a SQ system that can have the gains tweeked and a 5 minute box change and be able to boom a 144.5 with ease

hell i have all that why do i want a pair of new subs. oh yeah cause 144.5 ain't close enuf to 155 yet and i can't see the 10's lasting more than 3 more comps especially the way i belt them
~Sparkles~
My system while not being incredibly high end i think is reasonable for SQ and a decent amount of volume. But i got started when i was about 10 of 11 stuffing around with dads stereo (Kef Consertos) then when i was 12 i wanted a stereo but dad wouldnt let me get a crappy all in one system so he serched for month till he found an old (1985) pioneer component setup which cost less than the all in one systems goes harder and sounds better. over time i have rebuilt the speakers into better suited enclosures and changed drivers amps cdplayer pre amp scrapped the tuner added a MD deck ect. so when i put in a system into my car i wanted it to sound at least half as good as my bedroom system (which would shame most home theater systems) but im still working to get there bt i think when i install this new precision power amp we might be getting closer
Rattlehead
My first system was loud and sounded okay, but really it was crap...coz there was too much bass.

Anyway, now I got a new car and I can't fit my Orion sub without losing my whole boot and then I'll lose the ability to take off the roof when I want.

So with space problems, I decided that I wanted a system that sounded good and didn't rattle the **** out of my new pride and joy.
