Does anyone know of someone who would be interested in building me some custom cross overs to run my Focal Polykevlar 3-way splits?? Because the OE ones, suck soo much power that they keep throwing my Alpine MRV-1005 into protection mode:( Unfortunately I don't have enough channels left to run them actively... ideas

I am just guessing, but make sure you check thoughly for speaker cable shorts on the car body-work first. I think it would be unlikely that it is the Focals crossovers causing the problem.

Wouldnt the protection mode mean that your speakers are presenting a less than two ohm stereo load? I heard that this happens on alpine amps.

I'd be looking far deeper than power draw - thats not your problem. Sounds to me likee a short of some sort. Might be in the wires, in the crossovers, in the amp. Who knows! But I can't see any way the "power draw" from the crossovers would be causing the amp to go into protection.

Agreed I would be looking into what is causing it, however, if it is custom passive crossovers you want, then Audioart & Technologies is who you want to speak to.

The one I had made for a 3 way setup would give you no change of $2000 though.

Thanks for the help guys, there are NO shorts anywhere in the system, the whole car is wired with 1/0AWG Phoenix Gold cabling, I have an Odyessy battery, all under bonnet earths are 1/0AWG. The 1005 has its own 1.5 farad Lightning Audio cap, all audio speaker leads are 10AWG. I have 14.6v at the front and have exactly the same at the rear. The crossovers are the only thing that I can think of, I have spoken to the Focal rep, he said he has had couple of complaints from people with Alpine amps, on Focal 3ways doing the same thing, replace the amp and the problem goes away....

$2000??!? for custom crossovers, hell maybe I might look at MB Quart comp x-overs then...
or just sell the splits...
Thanks guys
Mr_Bob
just upgrade to utopia 3 ways
better than throwing $2000 at custom X-overs...

or, you can pickup a VRx6.420 and run fully active for just over $2000... no need ofr the crossover at all

You should speak to someone who runs focal speakers and alpine amps. I have been told as u increase the volume, the impedance of focal speakers goes down, therefor putting your amp into protection mode. Have they worked succesfully for u before?

UTOPIA?? hehehhe, been there done that, hated them.... one of the worst sounding speakers I have ever heard(I had friends sit in my car and laugh that I spent $1400ish on them). I had them before I got these.... they made the system shut down worse than the Polykevlars, that's why I went to the Polykevlars in a vain attempt to stop them from occuring... I rang Total Recoil and they think they maybe be able to help, so fingers crossed...

Oh, I hope I haven't offended any Utopia lovers, they just didn't do what I expected of them...hmmm should of bought the MB Quart 3-ways I wanted to begin with..

As some others have said. If the Alpine amp cant cope, buy one that can :-)

Maybe an Audison? They seem to be a favorite around here.

Thanks Cage...Yeah, I am looking at the Audison, they seem to have a really good reputation, however I was really trying not to have to spend anymore money on this car, before Autosalon... hmm decisions, decisions!
