I have been doing research into SQ subs just recently myself as I am in the market for one too.
So far I am leaning towards an Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1 or 12.1
http://www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/pr...Ser=KPE&Cat=SUBThese subs have great specs. But we all know specs don't mean a lot unless it sounds good, so I did quite a bit of searching for user reviews and found quite a few. A lot of people said they are the best SQ subs they have heard.
They are not the loudess subs around, but that is not their purpose. Although they can play reasonably loud with a continous power raiting of 350wrms and peak power raiting of 1400wrms. A lot of reviewers say the 10" can play as loud if not louder then most 12's and do it with more accuracy. I like my bass tight and accurate, not boomy.
These things can also produce sub-bass all the way down to 18Hz at usable volumes. Pretty impressive for a 12 let alone a 10 in my oppinion.
Great sensitivity too at 96dB for the 12 and 94dB for the 10.
Only downside I came across is that you need to feed them a reasonable amount of clean power to get the most out of them. So no skimping on a cheap amp. About 400wrms was the recommended min by most reviewers even though these Subs are rated at 350wrms continuous. Lots of reviewers said they quite happily handled 600-700wrms. A few reviewers said they burnt out coils running them on cheap 200w amps. Most likely from clipping.
Anyway, as I said. I am still searching myself, but these subs sound very nice to me if your main concern is SQ and not HUGE SPL, although they can play loud enough to give you hearing dammage within minutes, just not loud enough to win SPL comps.
If anyone has any first-hand experiance with these subs I would be interested in what you have to say.

I purchased an Infinity Perfect 12.1 about 2.5 years ago becaue of the information that Cage-AU has found. After I bought it, I found it to be mostly false. Althought the sub sounds excellent, it does not have the same output as most other subs. I also put it on a 700Wrms amp, it has lassted fine because of well set gains. This sub will not take 700Wrms at full volume/gain. I would only give it 400-500Wrms to reach it's full potential
Anyway, i'll push the Brahma. As I have one, and soon to have two Plus the Aussie distributor gives excellent service.

i would strongly recommend the focal 33 wx, i had a 27wx and they kick **** !!! but you really need a strong 400 - 500 rms to get the most out off em and have em sounding their best ...

Adding Velodyne to the list

Velodyne? Do they even make car subs? I thought they just made pre-built active subs for the home HiFi market? :-)
I do know they make some of the best home HiFi subs on the market though :-)

I'll throw the orion XTRPRO in the ring, not the Utopia's BUT give great S.Q. and are very loud for an S.Q. sub.

I believe Velodyne have stopped making car audio products only recently.
So I heard somewhere anyway.

I was bitterly disappointed with the Velodyne we used a few years back.
Running off a 500W Rockford amp it barely produced any decent output. Road noise in the car (S class Merc, very quiet) all but drowned it out.
Before you dismiss what I'm about to say, actually listen to a DD sub. I'm sick of people writing off gear they've never heard in the flesh!
A 3500 or 9500 in a low tuned box would have to be one of the best sounding subs I've ever used, and I've used them ALL.
In AJs Prelude, we have a 9515 15" in 6 cubes, tuned to 30Hz. Until you fold the seat down people swear he's got 6 tens. The bass is that "fast", "punchy" and "dynamic" .Then the best bit, it pushes over 150dB at 42Hz! Can you say PHAT?

Phil is right here. DD drivers were primarly designed as Pro SQ drivers untill people discovered they went bloody loud
also look into
Boston Pro, MBQuart Refrence, Focal 33WX, IDQ, Xtant or even subs such as Adire Shiver/Brahma

Nice for someone to back me up for a change!
What people don't seem to understand is that every feature that makes for a great SQ driver, just happens to make a great SPL driver, for example:
1. Rigid Cone
2. Long Throw
3. Powerful, linear motor
4. High power handling
5. Efficiency

Where can people demo DD in Vic/NSW?
DD Phil
Jun 21 2003, 08:00 PM
Doran is building a specific, new board just for DD in Sydney.
In VIC we have Stapleton Audio so far and are deciding on Melbourne dealers at present, I have had discussions with a couple but I need to get down there and see who knows their stuff.
Marc has had a 9512 of mine down there for weeks, I don't think he's even powered her up yet!
In the mean time I'm giving a SEVEN DAY, MONEY BACK GUARANTEE to anyone in VIC who can't audition a sub prior to purchasing it.
Most people buy DD on reputation alone, and you'd have to admit DD has got just about the best rep in the industry.

What are the lower end 2000a series DD subs like?
Stone
Jun 22 2003, 05:10 PM
Thanks Phil.
How come DD don't get compared in SQ reviews to the IDMAX, Brahma and JL W7? They seem to be the big 3 SQ subs at the moment.

The 2000s are incredible performers and will take 500Wrms with ease.
They deliver the same clean, defined lows as their big brothers. All DD woofers are built with the same quality parts and construction techniques.
DDs are built by a company with over 20 years of Pro Audio manufacturing experience, making very high end gear for studios, concert halls and cinemas.
As someone said earlier, once people realised how loud they could get they became known most for the successes in the SPL scene. Virtually every “big hitting” sub on the market today has been “inspired” by DD’s designs. Most people don’t know that DD made the original (ie best and loudest) “Juggernauts” for MMATS. That technology was “adopted” by several other new players.
You need to hear a car like AJs Prelude (single 9515) or my BMW (two 9510) it totally changes what you thought you knew about sub bass in a car. What AJs car does from a single sub and a Boston GT28 (SQ) amp is unbelievable.
