Does anyone have a recommendation for the HPF setting for a set of morel 5.25" components to acheive the best SQ/linearity?
I was considering something high, say 120Hz, to reduce distortion from reproducing lower mid-bass frequencies through the smaller drivers.
I have a variable 12db crossover available on the amp and can also add the HU 12db crossover at 80/120/160Hz to increase slope - ie both set at 120Hz to get a 24db/oct.
Would then dragging my LPF up to about 20Hz below this point (ported JL Audio 12W3) to fill in the gap effect overall system balance and quality?
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

I'd probly put the head unit HPF on 120, then the HPF on amp at around 80...
I think LPing the sub at 100hz may not sound very great...

I agree with Bodyjar that your sub trying to play 100hz range would start to get a little sloopy or boomy. If you want something to fill that whole you can look at upgrading to some good mid-range drivers (3 way setups) in the future or a new component set that will cover this gap. Basically the 5's are too small to cover that freq. and do it well but the sub is too big to make a nice note either.

I'd be surprised teh 5.25inch drivers would go pretty loud even if crossed over at 80hz. The 24db crossover would help alot.
I would first set both headunit and amp to 80hz. And if the fronts start distorting or bottoming out then move it higher.
If your into sound quality then it'd be better running at 80hz. But then the system wont be able to go as loud as it could.

i use a boston acoustics pro 5.5 (5 inch) driver as my centre channel, and have it high passed at 70hz on a 18dB/octave filter, and it handles power well (albeit 40wrms) with good midbass attack and no signs of bottoming or stressing unless pushed extremely hard.
you'd be surprised how well 5's can operate in the midbass region. but i guess it depends on the drivers used.
dont be afraid to go a bit lower.

If sound quality is the goal, I would definitely set the HPF lower than 120hz - 80hz will sound better, especially if its a 24db/octave slope. Sure they may not be able to handle quite as much power - but this isn't the SPL forum.
