I know $400 is probably nothing to most of you guys here, but to a poor-ass uni student such as myself its a at load of $. Even though its not heaps of money, can you recommend any HU's over other ones as far as SQ go in this price range ? Or are they all the same down this low ? Thanks

Under $400 I don't think there is such thing as an SQ headunit... all decks at the price range will be very similar in sound and specs... Go for which one you like the look of and has the features/pre-outs you need

Well I would have to point you in the direction of apline aswell for that sort of money, maybe even a second hand or end of line eclpise HU.
$400 isn't a great deal for a SQ HU, just make sure you get something with 3 pre outs and sub control (which is standard these days)

You may think Im an idiot for asking, but Im not really that knowledgeable about Car audio in general ... why do you need 3 preouts ? And why do you need a subout ? Is that to run a sub off your HU ? *scratches his head*

3 sets of preouts allow you to run 3 different amps, or a 4 channel amp and another without splitting the RCA's (which reduces voltage).
A subout lets you turn off, turn up/down the gain of your sub from the head unit. It's basically a dedicated RCA line for your sub amp.

I checked out my local, and they said they were all out of this HU, as was the dealer down the road. They also rang Alpine, and they said there are none left!!
I am at a loss as to which to buy.
i may just save up $650 and get the 2003 HU that replaced the 7892E (anyone know what its called or got info on it?)

From what I have read, U want a Headunit with as much sound quality as possible for $400??? Well why hasn't anyone recommended the JVC KD-SX995, it has LOTS of features, and the sound quality is fantastic for the price. U don't need to spend big to get big sound. For $450 u can get em, they have em at JB, JVC are awesome for the price.
Check it out

I've heard that you can get the JVC s995 for as low as $350.00, but I can vouch for the HU, they are excellent value. My mate picked his up @ JB for $400.00 for interests sake! Good luck!
Cheers...Mitch

if u want a sq hu, stick with an alpine 1, i figured out going all out helps, but most of the other alpine hu r bloody good as well.
i got a first in my comp with
HU-ALPINE CDA-7998R
front stage-ALPINE SPX-177A
amps- ALPINE MRD-M500 and MRV-F340
subs- ALPINE SWR-1021D
But now upgrade the front stage with a set of the new SPX-Z19T if any1 has heard of them yet. if u really want i can find out from the actual rep or my dealer to find out a good price for a hu or a good hu for ur $

hmm... i don't know about alpine as a cheapie "sq" headie.
i think the other players at this price offer more.
in sq, however, you're not really looking for features or flashing lights but "sound quality". i'm still baffled as to why alpine make brilliantly-specced and useful decks, yet throw-in 1-bit dacs. clarion and jvc's mid-range stuff of a few years ago had it right... 24-bit burrbrowns.
i reckon find yourself a 2nd hand clarion drx9255. sound will eat the rest of them for the price.
just my thoughts
