Ok, guys, Just Hypothetically, consider the following:
1. You own a Pioneer DEHP-9350 Deck
2. You are getting a new car, so feel like a change, but dont want to take a 'step down' so to speak.
3. You want to spend upto $2,000 on an SQ orientated H/U
What would you choose and why? (Strictly one H/U and a reason must be specified!)
Just after some ideas thats all...on a slightly different topic, how do the new Pioneer in-dash DVD Players/LCD Screens go as far as SQ is concerned? Do they have T/A, EQ etc?
Look forward to your responses!

I'd go for a Nak like this:
purely because its
a) a nak
b) will suit the interior of the tib
c) has amazing dacs
d) it also recently won at the 2003 CES
details at:

That is a beautiful deck, I've always liked Nak. I want one. Anyone know the price?
Back to the question.
Since your 'meagre' budget doesn't allow for a Nakamichi CD700 or Denon DCT-Z1 then I will say a Clarion DXZ935. It has everyhing you need. Time Alignment, AC-2 Processor (surround sound) and dual 24-bit dacs. Pity about the looks though. If only it looked like a Clarion DXZ835MP or a Nakamichi....

If it were me I'd go an Alpine 7878R. I do like the 7998 but not the fact that the face plate cannot come off. I think the 7878R retails for $1399, but as it is an older model you could probably pick one up for $900. Has all the features you need. 3 pre-outs, TA blah blah blah. But if the face plate thing does not worry you, then a 7998 might take your fancy.

Alpine CDA9815
6 channel T/A 5 band parametric EQ, plenty of Alpine goodness.
RRP ~$1000.
since you'll have change, see if you can get the PXA700 as well!

Welcome to my world beau. I've been shopping for HU's around $2k for the last month now and still cant decide!
The options are pretty much this:
Alpine 7998
Eclipse 8061 or 8051
Pioneer 9450
Clarion 935
I have narrowed my choice down to either the 7998 or the 8061/8051 (leaning more towards the 8051 over the 8061 as I dont need 16V balanced line outputs)
The pro's for the alpine are:
Huge flexibility with crossovers. Front/Rear/Sub all with HP/LP point, gain and slope adjustability.
5 band parametric EQ
6 Channel Time alignment
4V preouts
Nokia compatibility (but its like $600 for the hub i think)
The eclipse on the other hand doesnt have any processing on board and doesnt offer any form of time alignment but has 8V preouts and just plain sounds better from all reviews.
I was also looking into the pioneer TV/DVD setup, with the indash DVD player/screen and the P9000M processor (which has time alignment capability). This would make for a good setup but would come in around the $4k mark. I couldnt really find too much info on the amount of processing its capable of either, as I wanted proper T/A rather than the preset arrangement found in the 9450.

I Resent that! hahahahahahaha, although I do love those dolphins...dammit
Gotta agree that the Naks do have that 'sound4' look about them...hmmm...its a big jump from dolphins to sound4...
Gotta admit I havent really bothered looking at the Alpine range, never been an Alpine man, but they do have black decks...so I suppose they are worth a look.
Chris, the 9450 has proper time alignment, not just presets, unless they have taken it off since the 9350 has it. Just a bit fiddly to access it!
The Pioneer Screen/Processor combo sounds nice, but I couldnt justify spending 4k.
What about the Denon headunits, does anyone have access to these?
The more I look, the more I think I will just stick with what Ive got until I DO have $4k to spend

what about the McIntosh MX406 or MDA4000 (me finks!!)

$2k is a tricky price point to work with. I would either spend less (or keep your dolphins), spend more (slightly more on a MX406 or plenty more on a CD-700), or hunt around for a 2nd hand 9255 or HX-D1, and spend the change on a really nice front stage

hey
my order of headies would go (provided the budget would stretch)..
denon dct-zi
naka cd700ii
pioneer deq/x-p9
clarion hx-d1/9255 2nd hand
the mx406 or 5000 macs are great head-units, but they're clarions! lol. the 406 is a 9255 inside and the 5000, from memory, is very VERY close to a d1.
but, for a straight-off-the-shelf player, go a nak. the cd-400 is great, and the mb-100 is a beast (that still comes within budget last time i checked!). the mb-100 is a single-din 6-stacker and it has a "external box" housing 24-bit burr-brown dacs. sounds very nice... (has digital AND analogue ins too!)
just a thought...

Double your budget and go for the new Alpine Screen, you won't regret it, then you've got a nice SQ deck, TV, DVD etc etc etc etc...

The word is esoteric. Sound it out. Eezz-oh-teer-ik.
I've got one, it does what its supposed to do. Without bells and whistles, because, you don't need them.

The latest model is the CD700II, but i dont know if you can get these in australia yet. the CD 700 RRP is $3699. Nakamichi have realesed a new model (cd-400) to replace the old range (cd35z, cd40z, cd45z) but i dont know if you can get these in aus either.
Just a few links you might want to look at
Nakamichi - Mobile Sound
and for prices on Nak gear in Australia

Hehehe so do I - but I might be a little biased seeing as I have one in my car
I think you need to draw up what features you want and buy the unit that best matches your list.
You won't go wrong with most of the headunits mentioned in this thread.

I can get both the Nakamichi CD-400 and CD-700MkII if you are interested. In fact I'm using a CD-400 in a Audi TT install today. The CD-400 retails for $1199.00 and the CD-700MkII retails for $3999.00.
My personal favourite though (in fact a have them waiting to be installed into my own car!) is the Pioneer P9 and P9 processor. It is over the budget you listed but in my opinion, there's not much more out there that has all the features this unit has for the $$'s. If you need any further info, please feel free to email me on
