I've heard ported is best for RnB music and sealed for dance. What if you listen to both? Are there SQ subs that are better suited to these styles? Or can competently do both well?

I would say thats a pretty vague generalisation which may have come from R&B typically having big bass notes. I think you'll find if you buy a quality driver and build a suitable box for SQ purposes then it'll perform well for both dance and R&B. Ported boxes will tend to offer more output but will be larger and more hassle to make.
For example I've been fiddling with boxes for my IDMAX12 in WinISD and found the recommended ported enclousure offers just as smooth a curve @ < 100hz but just less roll off and thus would be a bit louder.
But yeah, I would steer clear of following such ideas as ported is good for x music and sealed is good for y. Some drivers don't suit either for whatever reason. Buy a quality sub and build the right box and you'll be loving every kind of music
Cheers

Thanks AndyB. I sorta knew it would be a generalisation as even RnB music has different beats and will threfore sound different anyways. I am thinking of changing the 3 BA 10's to 2 DD 12's each in a sealed enclosure. I wonder if they will give me a different/louder/less muddy sound?

A ported enclosure gives you the ability to control the output response and tailor it to suit the vehicle's acoustics.
You can make a ported box sound boomy like a sealed box, or dry, clean, tight and low (the way I like it). I have cars that make near on 150dB at 40Hz, they sound spectacular with music, no-body believes there is just one sub until you show them!
As stated earlier ported boxes tend to be larger than their sealed counterparts.
As for music suitability, both techno and R&B have most of the bass energy centred between 50 & 80Hz.

A premium sub in a well designed ported box will sound very tight, its only when cheaper subs are used where you can ported is not as tight.
